Nas Vs Eminem

Postby Jimmy Conway » Dec 7th, '12, 04:52

I know that there are only a few that think Nas is better considering that this is an Eminem forum. But I'd like to at least talk about it because I'm bored and I think Nas is kind of underrated a little bit.

If I had to choose, I'd pick Em. But I think you can make a strong argument that Nas is better. He has 10 albums and not a bad one in there. Some are a lot better than others, but I could put any of them on right now and enjoy it. He never made a Infinite or Encore. He was like 19 when he made Illmatic, just a kid and it's fantastic.

Em can produce and if I had both their catalogs laid out in front of me, I could probably pic more quality Em songs, so I'd put Em on top.

But, man, it's close... Nas has been fire from 94 to now.

He went from amazing to Amazing.

So if anyone can argue Nas's case better than my Jameson induced self, that would be interesting.

Amadeo wrote:It's not about how long a rapper has been good, or how many good songs he has, although basically every Eminem song from 1997 to 2002 was good to great.

It's about quality, period. You compare the two rappers when they're at their best, and Eminem is better in basically every way.

Probably.....I just feel like.....Nas has so many good songs, that you could argue for nas the same way.

For Every Em masterpiece.....Still Don't give a fuck, Stan, Say Goodbye,Stay wide awake(side note, em should name every song starting with an S)
There's

Nas- The message, Rewind, One mic, Either

I mean, the message, he rapped his story from Back to start. He was on some tarantino shit with rap.

I always found Nas pretty boring. The production on Life Is Good really brightens up the mood but other than that I just can't deal with Nas's voice and flow. It even sounds like he's having a bad time on some songs.

I'm actually listening to Cherry Wine (off LIG) right now and Amy's vocals really make that song x10 better.

You can't honestly believe those Nas songs are on the same level as those Eminem songs?

That Album he did with Damian Marley was fire too.

Definitely, Distant Relatives is one of my favorite albums ever. Musically, it kills both BME and WTT.

Nas was consistent. Em had higher highs and lower lows.

Both skilled lyricists, great in their own right, and greatly influential at their debut.

Fuck yeah, that album was amazing. I bumped that shit sooo much...hm...gonna do it now too.

Word, but I'm hoping Em rejected "Daughters" on a positive note, "Ayo I'm working on my record right now with Dre and if I'm feelin' the right vibe, I'mma hit you up. Is that cool?"

Em and Nas are behind-the-scenes buddies.

Yeah I love that album, I'm not even that big on Damien, but they went great together. When I went to Cincinnati in 2010, I listened to that album like twice all the way through by the time I got back.

But I don't see how Em gets out of that conversation without Nas being pissed.

Let's say he said what you said.....well every new collab comes out is like a slap in Nas face. And all the people he has been working with suck.

Yo I'm working on my record right now with Dre and I'm not feeling the right vibe with the best song on your album, so I'm going to go work with Rhianna, Adam Levine and Skyler Grey if I decide your worth two days of my time to write and record a verse I'mma hit you up. Is that cool?"

There's no comparison. I'm a Nas fan, but he is nowhere near as artistically significant.

He's nowhere near as varied, capable, interesting, diverse and has less to say in less interesting ways (at their best). Nas does not have the wit and unique phrasing that Eminem does, he's not as interesting or technically good (yes, Nas is very good, and very very slick at his best, but he's not on Eminem's level of obsessive, crafted writing and rhymes), his ideas are simply less compelling and he can't do as much. The Marshall Mathers LP is more significant than anything Nas has ever done.

And I'd say all of Eminem's albums are more interesting. Eminem is simply a more thrilling character on the mic, he puts a bigger blend of more things in to his work, he's a bigger personality with more ideas and more ways of execution. The artistry of Nas isn't as debate worthy, it's not as deep (yes he is poetic, and yes he has flair, but it's not on the same level) and it's not as vast.

Nas can write very well but he doesn't possess nearly as many qualities, or skills as a lyricist, storyteller, comic writer or any other aspect surrounding what he does conceptually and musically. "Kim" or "Stan" for example are towers, towers, towweeeers above any song or storytelling concept Nas has ever written. Because they're real time characters with incredible voice acting, scene nuance and atmosphere that he simply has never created to any similar degree.

Nas can be a brilliant writer, but at his best, he's not a totally head-fuck, out of this world talented, devilishly original voice. Nas is a skilled craftsman, not a genius. IMO.
