Is Em Really The Best Rapper Alive Right Now?

Lets get one thing straight, I love Eminem and his music. He is and will go on as one of the best rappers of all time and in my mind second only to Pac. But there was one thing that I was thinking about: is Em the best rapper alive? Lyrically he can go toe to toe with just about anyone but at the same time he doesn't really have message to go with those lyrics. Recovery was a great album for me but did we hear anything from Em that changed our opinion? I'm a big Lupe fan and I think it could be said he is the best rapper alive. Lupe is extremely lyrically and his music today has a message. Songs like Bitch Bad, Roses, Lamborghini Angels, and Unforgivable Youth make you think. Yes I could be a little hard on Em and that I haven't heard what his name album is but at the same time most of his rhymes in Recovery, Hell The Sequel and collabs, his verses has been more ego based. What do you guys think?

I don't know that there is a best right now. All the greats are on the Decline. DMX new album was alright, Nas was alright, Em's was alright.

All the newer rappers I've heard have been shit. I can't think of anyone that's just killing it right now.

My thing is while I do love that Em is lyrically, shouldn't the message in the songs but as important as the artist being lyrically? The last great Em song where his message was great was probably Beautiful. Lupe is preaching the same stuff he also has been but he still has a message in his music.

Lupe isn't at a good place right now to make good music. He's too focused on being a philanthropist, whilst being a rapper second.

I don't think there is any way to objectively determine who the "best rapper" alive would be, in all honesty.

It comes down to the criteria you set, and when you get down to things like content, it comes down to the type of content you value. Some would say a preachy message is a gimmick; some would like an artist like Lupe for their strong views, but dislike Immortal Technique because his sound isn't diverse enough.

So, could it be argued he is? I suppose it could, but I wouldn't want to be that guy. The truth of the matter is, when you take into account all he's accomplished and the skill he has presented throughout his career, it would be foolish to discount him from the conversation, but I don't think the people that know his work the best would try to even make that argument.

I think Eminem in 2003 was the best rapper alive, cause he had something to talk about. The last time Em had something to talk about was in 09 when he dissed Mariah, and his drug problem topic was fresh he was lyrically insane. Now, he has already talked about his drug overdosed all through Recovery. The only time Em is at his super best is when he has a topic to rap off of.. But to answer the question I still think Eminem's the best.. or maybe I'm a just a brainless stan who covers for Em on everything

I don't judge artists on features. Right now he's not the best simply 'cause he's not in the competition. When he drops an album I'll judge.
