Relapse Vs Recovery

Postby Jimmy Conway » Dec 18th, '12, 23:03

Most threads end up here. It seems to be pretty divided. There seems to be one large group that loves one and hates the other. And then there are the total stans that just eat up everything.

Part of me thinks it was record label strategy. Giving the people who love the more crazy side of Em with Relapse. Then giving the emotional, more mainstream feel of Recovery.

Relapse feels more complete to me. Em just sounds like he was really into it, there was an obvious direction(excluding crack a bottle). Recovery sounds forced. I will always believe that Em liked Relapse and wanted to do Relapse 2, but outside pressure caused him to change direction. Recovery has bad beats, forced flows and lyrics and little replay value. Recovery is one of the few albums these days I paid money for and I don't even listen to it. I still listen to Relapse. There was a lot of songs made in the Relapse era and with some adjustments to the album, adding some songs, removing some songs, to me, it's right up there with Eminem show.

I know some of you guys that have came here every day for the past five years will be aggravated seeing a topic that has been ran into the ground. But that's not my fault, I didn't trick you into coming into this thread.

Relapse.

As you put it, 'Slim Carey', I guess I'm a total Stan as I like both of them. They're both different sides of a coin, that's the beauty of them.

Don't buy the 'Em wasn't into Recovery argument' for a number of reasons:

1. Relapse proved that Em has complete control over his music, as the accents got immense criticism at the time and it was still released.

2. He said he took a different direction and tracks like On Fire, Forever, DTW all were moving in a different direction (i.e. no accents) and there's no reasons not to believe him.

3. 'Guess I ran them accents into the ground'. He did.

4. He does live shows and only performs 3AM from Relapse and only Forever from Refill (not a Relapse song). He could quite easily perform more as he knows lots of his fans like Relapse. He clearly prefers Recovery.

Stay Wide Awake >
I don't want you to be-lieve,
Cause this is something that I must use, to suc-ceed,
And if you don't like me then fuck-you,
Self-e-steem, must be fuckin' shootin' through the roof,
cause trust me,
My skin is too thick and bulletproof to touch me
I can see why the fuck I dis-gust you,
I must be allergic to failure, cause every time I come close to it,
I just sneeze but I just go a-choo, then a-CHIEVE

Most songs from Relapse require amazing breath control, Eminem would have to be standing in the same place if he wanted to perform a song like Stay Wide Awake. Unless, of course, Mr. Porter was there being his hype man.

But then again that would ruin the song.

Relapse.
01) Buffalo Bill - Flow's banoodles. Easily in the top 5.
02) 3am - You already know
03) My Mom - Never cared for it from the start
04) Insane - Has gradually become meh for me over time. It's aiiight doe.
05) Bagpipes From Baghdad - Easily in the bottom 5. Ugh.
06) Hello - It's cool.
07) My Darling - Love it. Wish it made the actual hard copy album.
08) Same Song & Dance - Another meh song.
09) We Made You - ....
10) Oh No - Again, should've made the actual album
11) Careful What You Wish For - Easily top 5. So fucking underrated. It's the only song that captures that "Eminem sound" the best since his comeback.
12) Stay Wide Awake - Brilliance right durrr.
13) Old Time’s Sake - It's not even on my iTunes.
14) Must Be The Ganja - Irritating save for that verse where he's describing murder weapons, the killer and shit.
15) Elevator - Still good.
16) Deja Vu - Best song on the album. Nuff said.
17) Beautiful - I like it, don't get why it gets so much hate aside from the fact that it sounds nothing like the rest of the album/doesn't gel whatsoever.
18) Music Box - Fucking badass song. :worship: That third verse.
19.Underground - The badassery is totes ridic with this one. Gets unnecessary hate.

Recovery

1. Cold Wind Blows - Song exhausts my auditory system around the 3rd verse.
2. Talkin’ 2 Myself - Easy top 5. I love it.
3. On Fire - I've mentioned before that this is the best song on the album.
4. Won’t Back Down - Was cool at first. Now it's unlistenable.
5. Untitled - Yeah....don't really care too much about this one.
6. Going Through Changes - Good, but a tad overrated.
7. Not Afraid - I'll say this. It's not bad. It's not good. Works I suppose for the purpose of being a single.
8. Seduction - One of the better tracks on the album.
9. No Love - I play it maybe once or twice every 2 months now.
10. Space Bound - Got bored of it quick. Not on my iTunes anymore.
11. Cinderella Man - Worst song on the album. That beat just does my head in, I don't care how many multis he had. And that hook. Ugh.
12. 25 to Life - I don't listen to it as much as of late. It's ok I guess.
13. So Bad - I still love it. Gets unnecessary hate as well.
14. Almost Famous - Slightly overrated but it's in the top 5.
15. Love the Way You Lie - It's good. Nothing bad really to say about it.
16. You’re Never Over - Unlistenable now.
17.Ridaz - Don't care for this at all.
18.Session One - Mehhhhh.
19. Despicable - I like the first half more. i still listen to it regularly.

Relapse, biatchzz :coffee:
"So one last time, I'm back, 'fore it fades into black and it's all over, behold the final chapter in the saga, trying to recapture that lightning trapped in a bottle twice, the magic that started it all...tragic portrait of an artist tortured....trapped in his own drawings..." - Bruce.
