What happened?

I've just been crying for hours. The worst part is that it's just the distance between us (3 hour car journey) that she can't cope with and nothing that she or I have done. We still feel the same about each other.

This one is going to be fucking painful for a while.

My first serious girlfriend and I dated for a bit over three years when we were 18-21. This girl was the best thing that ever happened to me. She was so in love with me too. I have never felt so secure with anyone since. Honestly, I have a really hard time coming to terms with the concept of love and what it actually means, or what it actually feels like. I saw the way she idolized me, I'm not trying to sound like a cocky prick but I was this girls whole world. And the more she loved me, the more it made me question how much I loved her, because I never felt like I could match her level of emotion. I had a lot of female friends and she never trusted me and that always hurt me so much, but at the same time I understood why, because I am pretty fucked up when it comes to females and I really would flirt with other girls sometimes. But I would never hurt her, not like that.
So one day out of the blue I ended things. I told her I didn't love her anymore and that I didn't want to work on things because we were past that.
She cried herself to sleep every night for a year because I broke her heart and the ironic thing is I genuinely believe I was in love with her. People just feel things differently I guess. She has changed so much though, she is such a strong independent woman now and I am so proud of her. She dealt with our breakup with such class.
Since her I have come to learn that she was one in a billion. The kind of girl you could trust, and from my experience that's very rare. But if I never broke up with her she wouldn't have become the strong, happy, successful person she is today. She would have still been a paranoid insecure naive girl and the more out relationship deteriorated, the more obvious that became.

I can't speak for you or your situation, for all I know you've dealt with heartbreak before but I can tell you that once you get over this person, which will eventually happen (though mightn't be what you want to hear right now), you will be stronger, wiser and better for it.

Thanks man, I've had one break up before which was absolutely horrendous. I learned a lot from that and I feel that I can cope better with this one.

I know that it takes time and that there are other people out there for me. But I waited a long time to meet someone else and it sucks that its circumstance that's broken us apart.

I've got 6 months to complete my medical degree and I can't get too affected by this but it's so rough. I know what's coming...the long nights, the tears, the pain. Gotta just get through it.

If there is love the distance shouldn't be a big problem. At some point someone can go to live with the other.

Cityfan31, basically, I went to uni this year and I'm in a different town (but it's like 30 minutes away) so we could've still see each other but she's getting mad jealous while I never was the one to flirt when I was in a relationship and the lack of trust really hurts.

So as time went by, it kept getting worse and worse until we got to this point.

I just read what you wrote, and I disagree with this part. You can't really know how she would be. People change with the years too , I'm more selfconfident now than when I was 17. And if it wasn't you , it would be another. Everybody has been hurt sometime.
