I agree with bigray, it's all about opinions and the words overrated and underrated are overused.

Personally, I don't know a single rapper who is overrated.

It has become a word used by people who want to justify why they don't like a particular popular artist.
Who decides if an artist like Tupac is overrated? If the reviewers and his fans think he is one of the best writers, that's just their opinion. And maybe you don't agree with them, but that's just because people have different tastes.
If most of the reviewers think that pac or Eminem or whoever you want is one of the best writers, it doesn't mean that he is overrated.
If you don't like a popular artist, it's just because you don't like him, it doesn't mean that he doesn't deserve his hype... it doesn't make him overrated.

When you say, "Kendrick Lamar is NOT overrated," you have to prove it. You have to show examples of Kendrick Lamar being a great rapper. Even if people dislike a song or artist, they will give their respect and admit when a song/artist is great.

I'm not the biggest fan of Eminem's recent music, but his recent "My Life" verse wasn't too bad. Neither was his "C'mon Let Me Ride" verse.

Tupac is pretty much the modern day Shakespeare and has already been compared to him numerous times...but Pac is not as classic or prolific.

You're also forgetting that the same man brought us The Marshall Mathers LP, one of, if not, the greatest hip-hop album(s) of all time.

You really can't nitpick the lines of a 40-year-old rapper whose peak was 13 years ago. Especially after all he's done for the genre? Absolutely no way you can expect more from the man.

Have you actually read Shakespeare and considered him this great writer yourself? or do you just refer to him as that because you think you should?

Not having a go at you in particular, but I think a lot of people just throw around names because it's been historically common to talk about X person in that context but, do you really know?

Anyway, in a serious way - I'm not sure how you'd even begin to qualify the greatest of all-time, but Eminem is certainly among the greatest I've ever heard across... any art-form, I think he has a sharper tongue and has come up with ironic concepts legendary comedians could only dream for and at his best is certainly capable of unparallelled capability in so many directions...

If you look at something like "Stan", the combination of the realism, naturalism, rhyming, word choice, emotion, humour and all these elements in to like... a story a few minutes long; a story that resonated and has become this whole thing, it's real drama; he's capable of making true drama and truly thrilling art just from lyrics and a vocal performance. And aside from his amazing vocal abilities and diversity, his writing is certainly the crux to that. So yes I would absolutely place Em amongst the greatest writers of all-time, but, I've not read nearly enough to state that, nor do I care to even try and define that. I'm bored with those discussions now, just take each artist for what they are. Eminem is a great writer. I just want a new fucking album now.
