Does he come in your list of top 5 people in the world as a role model/inspiration/look up to person/idol or whatever you want to call it. Obviously this list wouldnt include family and friends. List of famous people is what Im talking about.

Oh for sure.

Because he's a person who wasn't born in to anything, with about the least help you could possibly have besides a few friends... who had everything stacked against him... and through sheer talent and force of will not only succeeded but made himself arguably the greatest rapper of all-time, and one of the greatest artists of all-time at a time (1999) when it seemed a lot of the legends were already sealed, let alone a white guy coming and doing that.

He changed everything and set new standards.

Completely self-made and got everything just about right. And no other rapper and few other artists were able to create such a balance of commercial and critical success. His initial success was NO compromise; we may think his goofy singles were compromising but looking back, they were 100% him and he sacrificed almost NOTHING and became king.

Creating hits and still being the shit is a hard mix to master, and nobody mastered it as well as him. Who the fuck else could write a song 'as hip-hop' and as complex as "Lose Yourself" and have it be a GIGANTIC #1 single. Most other rappers go straight for dumbed down or broad themes or simplify their technique or aim to try and achieve that; with shit like "Stan", "Without Me" and "Lose Yourself"... he showed that you could be as complex, funny, daring and provocative as you could on an album, and still create a hit. Through melody and craftsmanship.

Melody is the only thing that creates hits, and "Lose Yourself" is one giant melody, similar to "Bully". All these rappers who think you have to make a club record or do this or that are failing in ambitious terms, it's a cop-out. Because if "Lose Yourself" can be a #1 hit, that shows there's no connection between complex themes and a song not being able to achieve that level of success. It's all about quality, melody and technique, so there's no excuse.

Probably in my top 5 because I still have a lot of respect for him but he isn't in my top 3 anymore.

Absolutely. Just the way he holds himself I respect so much. Humility is one of my favorite qualities in a person and Em is so unbelievably humble, especially for someone as big as he is. Just knowing that the reasons he continues to rap is because he just loves it and wants nothing but respect shows how cool the guy is.

Plus he's funny too which is awesome, and not in a retarded Lil Wayne funny, but a genuinely sarcastic funny.

Not particularly no. He's mostly ordinary as a person to me, actually.

You think what he's achieved is ordinary?

It take somebody with extraordinary persistence, drive and determination to get where he is and a profoundly obsessive mind to hone his craft as well as he has.

He may seem ordinary when he talks, in terms of being relaxed and understandable, but everything else about him is anything but.

By far my favorite rapper of all time but not a role model, inspiration, look up to person, idol or whatever... not at all.

Apart from his phenomenal, out of this world skills as an artist, he was always too messed up & even lame to be a role model to whoever outside his fam. He's not even cool apart him been an artist.

The great thing to admire him about or giving him mad props is the way he always fought for his kids & loved them to the full, even when he was in his darkest phase of his life.
His loyalty is a great thing as well.

Fine. Perhaps not ordinary, but a lot of people are very driven and have tremendous determination...I can safely say that about myself, actually, as I managed to buy my first house at a very young age thanks to a well-paying job I got chosen for in hard economic times. Evidently Em's done great for himself, but I can't say he particularly inspires me. That's all I'm saying.

This is so wrong. His skills, his talent, his dedication, all the things EmBase said-that makes him a role model. Not his private life and problems. He is an inspiration for going against all ods, through hard times and become a great and respected in whatever you do. His private life has nothing to do with that.
I want to play basketball like MJ, not fuck as he does and raise my kids the way he raises his.
