RIAA expanding program, Eminem + others to benefit

The Recording Industry Association of America is expanding its gold and platinum certification program to include song streams on the Internet.

The first round of 56 combined digital single awards counting both downloads and streams go to artists like Eminem, Adele, Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen.

The RIAA is the latest to recognize the popularity of streaming music over the Internet. Billboard also recently changed its chart system to include streams. The gold and platinum certifications will be based on data from on-demand streaming services like Spotify and Rhapsody and video streaming services like YouTube and Yahoo! Previously, only song sales had been recognized.

The RIAA says in a Thursday news release that 27 artists will receive multi-platinum certification, 18 platinum and 11 gold.

Personally, I love and hate that youtube will be counted. Love it because youtube is used all the time, hate it because it's not a legal download and it's also sort of a crap shoot.

I personally think they should have created a new certification just from streaming rather than lumping it together with digital sales certifications.

Label's pay for certifications. The RIAA won't just certify an album/single from x5 platinum to x11 platinum in one jump. They have to certify all the ones in between. This is basically so the RIAA gets more money from labels when they pay for certifications.

He actually went from x3 to x12 platinum with Baby, which is now the highest certified song is RIAA history, and the first single to ever go diamond.

I think online SALES should be counted... and, whilst it seems to make sense to include streams... well, I guess Spotify streams makes sense / is more definitive... but I dunno about YouTube. Whilst it's certainly a measure of popularity... I dunno, views are so easily manipulated, and so many can be out of accident or a random moment of curiosity or just because the song is already known, or because somebody fancies him lmao, like, a million different reasons people click on videos...

Compared to: if you search and stream an Eminem song on Spotify, or buy an Eminem track, there's no mistaking the intention and little room for error, it's more of a realistic portrayal of a track's true worth as it shows how many people are actively seeking, or willing to buy it.
