Behind Kanye West's Mask

Postby momentsgolden » Jun 12th, '13, 10:18

Can someone copy paste the NYtimes interview here? I am writing via mobile and therefore cant copy paste the link.

Reading that piece humbled me. First, the language was quite complex i did not understand a few words. Visceral. Is it because i speak it as a second language? Is it because i dont read enough? Is it because people i associate with arent smart enough? Humbling either way.

The way Kanye was talking of his art. Of compromise. Of impact. He was like an Eminembase with the power to actually make art with that mindset. He quoted Tipsy as a song that inspires him. That inspires me.

Sometimes its easy to bash an artist. To praise an artist. People like Kanye, Kendrick and Andre make me jus.... Wanna stop and really explore this culture before i do.

In the middle of reading, some good bits, except for this:

but I’m assuming I have the most Grammys of anyone my age, but I haven’t won one against a white person.

:facepalm

Oh, apart from Late Registration beating Encore for the rap album Grammy?

I'm not sure about others but I'm sure there's more. He beat THE white artist in his own genre and he's still crying racism? This race shit is getting REALLY, really tiresome.

So many mainstream black rappers seem to be itching for racism... every time something isn't perfect they find some way of making it a black and white thing. Do they ever wanna move on or do they want to go backwards? Nobody is focusing on race but them. Grow the fuck up already.

Also, at least get the facts right.

Also, one area he shows extremely limited thinking in is the trivial award bodies of recognition. Sure they add to your resume but if you're making groundbreaking music, history doesn't give a shit about fucking Grammy's. The art that you put out does what it does, no Grammy changes that or changes history. 2Pac never won a single Grammy... and I guess nobody ever talks about him right? History was so unfair to his legacy. Lol.

Plus it's not a sport so his analogy doesn't work, you can't measure how good art is - it's the opinion of a few people, a board of people that year... there is no 'fair'.

For someone with his potential of expansive thought, you'd really think he wouldn't get so infatuated with such meaningless petty shiny nonsense. Focus on the music, fuck the gold stars.

But lmao @ this:

It’s only led me to complete awesomeness at all times.

*still reading*

I am the nucleus
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified

This man's ego is planet-sized.

He's an interesting person though, as far as rappers go. Most rappers seem to have big egos, or at least pretend to, but don't have the intelligence or expansive ideas to go along with it. I don't see what he's doing like he sees it, but I am glad that someone is at least trying to expand the genre in a real and organic way. It's not manufactured, it's just sort of...strange, sometimes.
