I came up with "Rappers Delight" by Sugarhill Gang (1979). The song didn't top any charts though.
I found "Rapture" by Blondie, which did top the charts, apparently becoming known as the first Rap song. I was just wondering if you guys could enlighten me on your take of the history of rap. And What are the oldest songs you listen to? Thanks ! Not sure if this could be in the Hip Hop or The Backstage section.
Sugarhill Gang is the original fake hip-hop group... if you want to go deep into Old School try Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five... then Melle Men & The Furious Five, Grandmaster Caz, Africa Bambaata, Cool Moe Dee & Kurtis Blow... those are the original GOAT rappers... the next wave goes with Run DMC, LL, Fat Boys etc. etc.

yeah the guy who rapped rappers delight didn't even change the lyrics from the guy he got it from and accidentally used his name
"check it out, i'm the c-a-s-an-the-o-v-a"
I know one song which started the whole culture of hip hop was Apache which Grandmaster Flash used to spin to. Duno which year but I think the mid 70s
I only go as back as mid/late 80s like Geto Boys, Beastie Boys and Run DMC then onwards tho.
