Musicians also need to learn to sing, then do both at once during live shows (recall both lyrics and music, coordinate fingers, sing on beat). Musicians generally master more than one instrument, too.

They also write music as well as lyrics, most rappers without a producer can't make music.

Yeah I always have this argument with my friends who don't like hip hop. Its frustrating, I always say that even if they don't like the musix, can they not respect it as a craft and that it takes skill, creativity and some talent to do it really well.

One of my favourite aussie rappers 'Drapht' has a good song thats on this topic called 'Air Guitar':

Check it out, I'm always curious what people think of certain aussie hip hop songs (try and get past his nasally voice haha)

I think it's a sentiment that gets expressed too often by people that don't know the genre well enough to respect it. I do feel that rappers aren't familiar enough with the other aspects of creating music, outside of writing lyrics. If they were, I feel that there might be more creativity in the way they structure their songs.

I hear that shit all the time tbh.

Yeah I had an argument on Facebook with this pure metalhead faggot (metal isn't gay but PURE metalheads are) like a year ago over this. We are no longer friends lol. It pisses me off when people make this shitty assumption. In fact, many rappers can actually play piano.

The problem is, mainstream rap is so bad, and the mainstream has a lot of rap.

Anyone can rap badly, just as anyone can play an instrument badly.

Here's what I say:

Anybody can rap just like anyone can play the piano and play the guitar. If it would pick up the piano I would suck but at the same time if you started to rap you would suck to. In either one, you need to keep practicing and improving your craft.

It's easier for bad rappers to sound good (over a catchy beat) than for a bad musician to sound good.

To excel as a musician you have to be very talented, the same cannot be said for rappers.

Are you talking solely about playing instruments?

Because there are endless pop stars.
