Except for the production on Lifes a bitch the album is absolutely flawless. I can see why some people prefer It was written over this piece but I feel the lesser amount of tracks makes the overall feel a little better on this one.

The only album I own on vinyl, Cd and MP3. A top 5 of mine, definitely.

Seems like it may be one of those things that's hard to judge in retrospect if you weren't there. I wasn't a rap fan in 94, so I can't really speak on it too much. I suspect the rhyme skill level Nas displayed on there was revolutionary in a way that we take for granted now, though.

But I don't find it too enjoyable to listen to, and it also seems like one of those things where people decided a long time ago, "this is the greatest album there will ever be, no matter what happens from here on out." And of course, Eminem emerges as the Roger Federer of rap, with skill nobody had ever seen before...and the "old timers" aren't sure what to do about it, other than pretend "he doesn't have da content, son." In reality, unless you're a fan of listening to some NYC references and other random rhymes, Illmatic has nothing of interest content-wise.

Em's first three albums
Lupe's first two albums
A few of Jay's albums
Nas's next following albums

Yeah but true inventive genius is usually incredibly long-lasting...

Take the Beatles; I wasn't alive in the 60s and 70s and never had that impact of them, and I'm a 23 year old hip-hop and yet when I listen to them I totally hear the genius and their music is a hell of a lot more melodic, inventive, original, bold, political and enjoyable than most I hear to this day.

So I don't think that's a very good excuse...

Its an ok album. I guess it has a lot do with it having production by dj premier that wets everybodies pants. I dont remember any stand out lines from the whole album

Well the one for me is "I never sleep, 'cause sleep is the cousin of death"

But the only songs I ever really play to this day are "NY State of Mind" and "Halftime"... I really don't see it overall as a top 5 album. It's definitely great, and a classic, but it's a fairly harmless classic... it's great hip-hop, but there's definitely greater.

It was just unique due to Nas' style at the time. But rap style alone ain't enough to make it GOAT. i know the prod is great, as are the songs but... there's not a single song concept which is like WOW or anything truly inventive or AMAZING. It's just like 'great rap' start to finish.
