As reported by Deadline, Childish Gambino (a.k.a. Donald Glover)will helm a new TV show for FX.
After an industry start in the writing room for NBC’s 30 Rock, Childish Gambino landed a regular spot on the now acclaimed show "Community" in 2009. According to a recent Deadline Report, the rapper/actor/writer will now spearhead a new thirty minute comedy show for TV channel FX, a station that also hosts popular shows like "Sons Of Anarchy," :It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia" and "Louie." The show, which will presumably credit the rapper using his given name, Donald Glover, carries the working title "Atlanta" and will be based to some extent on the city’s music scene. Glover will be writing, executive producing and playing the lead role. He was born in California but raised in Georgia.
While he will continue to play the part of Troy Barnes in "Community’s" fifth season, he will appear in less than half of the season’s 13 episodes, which, Deadline reports, will grant him the freedom to pursue the FX venture.
Glover’s musical success as Childish Gambino, a name culled from a Wu-Tang Clan Name Generator, paralleled his rise as a writer and actor. Although he released music at least as far back as 2005’s The Younger I Get, his more noticed releases began with a slew of independent mixtapes and albums including 2008’s Sick Boi and the two part mixtape I Am Just A Rapper series from 2010. His 2010 release Culdesac and 2011’s charting Camp have been his largest successes to date. The latter album was released via Glassnote Records, Gambino announced his signing to the label at the Los Angeles stop of Rock The Bells in 2011 in an interview with AllHipHop.
Glover has also put together a number of successful comedy performances including a "Comedy Central Presents" stand-up special and another entitled Weirdo from 2010 and 2011 respectively.
Gambino has continued releasing music including an appearance on Chance The Rapper's Acid Rap mixtape. Some have speculated that he is currently preparing a new album.
