How Do I Get Back Into Rap

Postby SajN » Aug 13th, '13, 23:09

I have been really bad with checking out new rappers for couple years now. I think the only album I've listened to so far this year is Sadistik's "Flowers For My Father".

I usually listen to Eminem, Sadistik, Rhyme Asylum, some Diabolic, Xzibit, Lowkey, Jedi Mind Tricks/AOTP, Fort Minor, Hopsin, Masta Ace, Mos Def and some songs from here and there.

I really suck at checking out new songs and new and upcoming rappers.

Any tips to what I can do (except "Download this album and listen to it") to get back in the Hip-Hop mood?

One problem seems to be that I am very picky.

Get Spotify or Pandora on your smartphone and put a random hip-hop station based on an artist you like. You'll get recommended songs based on what you like and that will rekindle your love for the genre.

Is it just hip-hop or music in general?

If it's just hip-hop, I would recommend you try some cross-genre stuff, or even just a non-rap song with a rapper feature.

EDIT: Never mind, I misunderstood. Start with some "older" stuff that's new to you, like some of the more celebrated mixtapes from last year or two years ago and move up from there. Make it a journey of discovery, instead of a race to keep up.

You think Big Sean's verse on Control is wack. No disrespect, but i think that just shows rap ain't for you at this point.

Mainly the stuff I mentioned in the post above you.

Thanks for the suggestions, people. What I mostly struggle with is to actually listen to an album. I might download it, and then it just stays there. The biggest problem is probably the fact "where do I start" because rap is so huge now, and there are lots of big names.

But alright, I think I'll find something from 2009 or a little earlier, and go from there :y:

I know one thing, though, I really gotta check out Tech and Kendrick.

I don't think it's wack, but it's not anything special either.
