Hmm... well I'd kind of disagree...

the MUSIC of those songs are kind of light and catchy... like this...

But, HIM, on them... on "We Made You", I think it's obvious even from his rapping that he was going to be intense, self-deprecating, witty, detailed, a lot of little signs of darkness...

And "The Real Slim Shady" is pretty darkly witty, it actually sums up MMLP quite well...

"Berzerk" feels goofy... also seems like there's going to be a lot of sound-effects etc. as listen to "Numb" and then this, the style feels similar, which, is actually awesome; and "Here Comes the Weekend"... I feel that's going to be the MMLP style... which is really cool - bunched up rhyming, tight-ass flows, nice wordplay and witty... but the constant sound effects?... hmmm...

I dunno, we'll see. I think no matter what happens... we'll get some of the most amazing stand-alone tracks of his career... just wonder if he can make it a cohesive and effective album now.

Well, I'll give you that The Real Slim Shady certainly wasn't goofy, like Berzerk and We Made You. It was funny, on point and showcased some stunning rapping. Was it dark? I dunno...

Recovery was pretty boring in that aspect.

I like those aspects too, but doesn't mean it's great just because he experimented.

Relapse was experimental to me... when Porter said to him 'you've been doing the same thing for years' @ Relapse... I dunno what the fuck he's listening to. Sounds like nothing else, and was a big risk.

I love the experimentation in "Berzerk" but some of the rapping just feels so lazy / lyrics so underwhelming, it's like it was all about the hook and he didn't care much else.

Well, that's what it was all about.. Berzerk's verses are all forgettable, the first one is my favorite but there's no denying the second and third verse were pretty weird.

But I know he can rap, so I'm not scared about that. Honestly the only thing I'd really, really want is stripped down beats and a calmer voice on some songs. I won't be able to stand a full album full of screaming/loud beats again. That's what scares me the most, especially since Survival/Berzerk both have loud beats.

emchick wrote:So you (and this is a serious question) fear we are in for another Encore based on the lack of bite in the first single? I kind of know what you mean though. They are the only first singles I have been disappointed in on the first listen (Just Lose It and Berzerk). Difference is Just Lose It never got better...

I don't seriously think we'll get an Encore no, I mean that's just obviously not the case from his standard of rapping; his rhymes and his flows; but... what's similar about "Berzerk"... wow, I mean even think of the hook concept similarity 'just lose it'... 'go bezerk'..

What I mean is though... every other song felt tight or sharp in some way. "Berzerk" feels musically sharp, and fresh... and I like the 1st verse... but everything else - from the themes, to his lines/lyrics, to the way he delivers them just feels so 'meh, here's another song, here's a bit of this, bit of that, self-reference... a celeb, here ya go' like "Just Lose It"... it's like he wasn't truly inspired so he just filled the verses with nonsense and created a broad hook about losing your mind...

So those aspects, I find worrying.

Considering this is MMLP2 and you would think he'd want the standard of concepts and lyrics to be of the very highest. From what was said about Rubin's invovelment... it feels even perhaps like he's intentionally tried to force himself to 'loosen up' and be goofier to try and remember / fain some kind of organic 'free flowing' humour like back in the day, as perhaps he was getting too serious and obsessed with rap-showcasing, which Recovery and BME... that's what it all was...

Not just that though - the production feels so messy again. I was really hoping for minimalism, but it feels like it may be really loud mess again.

What was said about Rick Rubin's involvement?

Basically that he was there to help Em figure out how to get back to what... basically to get him back to the essence of what Eminem is... which may be provocation and sarcasm... which is a good thing, but, maybe it came out a bit... I dunno, fizzled, in the single.

Hmm, not messy maybe but, loud, just like overshadowing Em...

Like seriously listen to "Criminal" or "Kill You" and tell me this shit doesn't sound messy...

It feels like audio abuse in comparison, just like RAHDJHFHJDFJHFFHJ noise-wise...

Em has a real fetish for loud-ass shit lately, and DJ Khail is producing again, sigh... I just can't see how they're going to create a consistent sound or avoid the similar sonic flaws of Recovery (too much going on / overpowering/crowding Em's voice) with people like that involved again...

Em's voice used to be the loudest thing about the song, which he always makes sure it is when he produces; he sounds so CLEAR and loud on MMLP... where as listen to "Berzerk" 2nd verse, it's like he's softy babbling in admist thudding loud ass music.

Berzerk was supposed to be that song that pokes fun at radio singles...I think that's ultimately what the song does. The concept, in itself, gives me hope even if the lyrics aren't exactly as good as, let's say, Survival's lyrics. But it's just such an enjoyable song. Music is about escaping and enjoying, and Berzerk provides that very well. This is the single, it's not supposed to be anything lyrical, it's supposed to be catchy to get people to listen to and buy the album. Which will probably be SO much better and darker than the single. Which is a great song. IMO. It's perfect because it sparks interest. Positive or negative.

Yeah this is what I'm after too. Though I do wish the verses were a bit better on Berzerk and the beat wasn't so busy, there's parts of the beat where I feel it could have run the same way for most of the song.

I agree.. I fucking love Berzerk, but it has me at a cliffhanger with curiosity about the direction he will approach this album..
It has me very worried.

I think this ''EminemBase'' guy should GTFO.

This site is for fans of Eminem. Not guys that think that ''Berzerk'' could potentially indicate something undesirable about the album. :facepalm

jk... I know everyone is entitled to their subjective opinions... but in all seriousness. I think Berzerk is a GOOD thing when speaking of it like it's a guaranteed indication of what's to come.

If we're lucky he won't be acting so serious like he was on Recovery.

We might get a playful Em... like the funny guy that wrote ''My fault'', ''Rain Man'', ''My First Single'' and ''Ass like that'' except without the shitty beats that made those songs suck.

We can only hope though... Actually, no... Shady won't disappoint.

The OP is worrying about nothing.

Well its downloads are still in the same ballpark as Not Afraid and it's heading for a Top 5 debut probably. What more do you want if you just released the single a week ago almost and haven't even dropped the video yet...???
