Ok... so I've been doing some thinking... I'm not going to waste time trying to narrow it down to the top #5 but I will mention some hooks that I feel are exceptionally well done. (Even though ~80% of his songs fall into this category and it's hard to differentiate between one of his standard hooks and one that stands out... they all do.''
Each of these songs are simply random examples of hooks that I feel were exceptionally well done. I'm NOT saying that they're the best. They are simply awesome for reasons I will explain... the rest of his stuff aside because I can't cover it all.
#1. 8 mile road;
I choose 8 mile road because of the meaning behind the lyrics. It's something that a lot of good people can relate to in their twenties. I believe this hook has likely positively affected millions of listeners while trying to find the correct ''road'' to take in life.
Is it his best ever? Likely not... but to allow every song he has ever written a hook for to pass through my consciousness at once would be asking a bit much for the sake of pumping out this post. Right now, I've thought of it... and it stands out.
#2. Amityville;
Again... I don't REALLY believe that this is his second best hook ever... I'm just using it to point something out.
Think of his voice throughout the hook in Amityville.
In this song, it's not so much what he's saying... but how he's saying it.
Can you think of an Eminem song that contains a hook that is expressed with more raw, aggressive, emotion inducing passion than this? Is there ANY song he has ever done in which the screaming style has been executed this perfectly?
#3. Kim.
This is a combination of what I looked for in #1 and #2 in my list.
This hook provokes emotions. It's fucking hardcore... but not only that (like Amityville) it is emotion provoking regardless of how it is delivered. Flawless.
#4. Where I'm At
If you were to examine the message that MOST rappers try to get across with (sadly) MOST of their songs... it would be the message that the hook of ''Where I'm at'' expresses...
Except not a single one of the members of the competition can touch Em when it comes to this either.
He's portraying about himself what 75% of rappers do... in 75% of their songs... literally... and expressing it better than all of them... all while not being this kind of rapper.
He hardly ever touches on the ''I'm the boss... I'm living the high life''kind of shit... but when he does... his lyricism destroys anyone else that has ever done it... which includes the majority of the most famous rappers that ALWAYS ''do it.''
#4. As the world turns
Is this hook clever as hell? Full of amazing wordplay? Clever puns? Amazing rhymes?
Nope.
Paul Wall Is dope.
I mean uh... no. It doesn't have to be any of that.
This hook is a perfect example of how Eminem can take something that means nothing. Something that if rapped by anyone else... would be mediocre... but uses his voice to make such a thing incredible.
Eminem proves with this hook that he can make the boring hook ''I don't know how this world keeps turning round and round... but I wish it would stop and let me off right now'' one of the most charismatic... emotionally affective (in a silly way that is impossible to describe verbally) ways imaginable. Behind those words... the subtext created with the manner in which he delivers these words paints a completely different picture in the minds of those who are listening... of the person delivering it... of the emotions that he's expressing. TRY to verbalize the feeling you get from hearing him say such a simple hook in the manner he does... there is definitely something there and the english language hasn't caught up to it yet. I think the voice he speaks this chorus in says a lot more about the mindset it is supposed to portray than the words themselves... YOU try to explain it better.
#5. Under the Influence.
Like I said about As the World Turns... it's not what he's saying... it's how he delivers it.
This song is the perfect example of it... HOW the words are being said saying more through subtext than the words being said themselves. In this song... it actually matches up. ''So you can suck my dick if you don't like... my shit... cause I was high when I wrote this so suck... my dick!''... It's perfect. Technically and grammatically... this chorus isn't even written correctly... but it all fits perfectly with the message behind it... and somehow the voice he uses to express the concept AMPLIFIES the concept. These are things that can not be explained with words to the degree in which would be required to verbalize to someone completely deaf or musically illiterate when explaining the greatness of it... unless the person picks up on what I am trying to explain (as most of you will) without me having to describe the impossible. Eminem himself can't decipher the emotions that certain tones of voice and certain note combos will describe in the subconscious minds of his listeners... but subconsciously, he knows how to deliver it even if his mind cant explain to him why saying things a certian way will provoke any sort of desired effect. Same with us. We don't know why certain ways of saying things... pronounciation... note combos... why they all affect us differently... but we know they do.
It's like he's speaking emotions to us that can't be described by us OR him... but we all get it.
What makes us get it is something unique about each and every true Eminem fan even if we don't know why we feel the way we feel.
The people that feel this stuff... I believe are ''cut from the same cloth''...
and that cloth wasn't made to clean toilets.
I believe people like us are gifted and lucky when it comes to the evolutionary development of learning through hearing that has been passed down through our genes.
I love you all.
Sexually.
