I don't know if he relapsed or not, but the "why" is simple: he's an addict, addicts often relapse.

And he could be lying to his family and friends about it. Of course, he wouldn't be able to fool them for long, but maybe they would lie publicly for him, too.

Em originally used the sleeping pills because he was stressed from 8 Mile and the shit surrounding him (the beefs, the publicity).

Eminem wasn't taking sleeping pills during MMLP. If he is trying to revisit the themes and styles of MMLP (and I will say this one more time) it seems only right he would be experimenting with the mentioned drugs.

The Marshall Mathers LP 2 has been in the works for quite a while now. This isn't something they just thought of right before the VMA teaser.

You didn't think it was a COINCIDENCE that Eminem would appear at Notre Dame-Michigan game to promote his new album, did you? Paul and Rick and Em and Dre had NOOOO idea that EMINEM'S HOME TOWN would be playing against Notre Dame two months before the album's release but a week after the song's release on iTunes, and so they just learned recently and decided it would be "cool" to have Em do a little interview and promotion.

This has all been beautifully executed, probably some of the best promotion for an album, ever. I'm guessing he's been working on the album since 2011, maybe early 2012. He could have relapsed years ago, and we would have not known.

MMLP 2 does not point to drug use, but the fact that he explicitly stated he's revisiting the first, makes me think he did a little bit more than "revisit".
