First of all, I enjoyed The Monster and think it will make a good mainstream single. I thought the understated tone of the song was much better than the "loud noise = emotion" logic of Love the Way You Lie.
So, in terms of the sound itself, I prefer The Monster, but in terms of the lyrics and content, this is where I must give it to LTWYL. I found LTWYL to be a bit grating.
The Monster briefly touched on concepts (like cognitive dissonance, the american dream, and brain disorders) but rarely explored deep into them. LTWYL didn't just say "hey, abusive relationships are bad", but it explored the steps, stages, details, and specifics. Monster did not do this.
With such a provocative title like "The Monster" and the fact that it was preceded by a radio-friendly song that successfully dark subjects. Also, a 5 minute song with relatively short verses is underwhelming.
So, this is where it stands. A profound novel that I find a pain to read versus a comic book that I like.
Still though, The Monster is quite good and it will be in my music collection about a week from now.
