It's the closest he's come to his old self, so no wonder many of us were remembering his old shit when we put on MMLP2.

Exaclty... plus so many references to his old shit. This album right here is an absolute masterpiece of art.

Just noticed the "My Dad's Gone Crazy" audio clip at the end of Rhyme or Reason...he also samples his Welcome 2 Hell verse in the same song ("die hard!"). I'm sure there's a hundred other samples elsewhere.

The way he makes "the lines are starting to get blurred" in Evil Twin blur into the first line was clever.

Who would have thought Eminem would be making layered songs with this much attention to detail again? Or he would be this consistently funny again?

It's like you say, the number of layers here in each song. You pick something new up each time. Can't fault much of this, it's so tight, dense and well done.
