The crazy thing is, I remember thinking post-Encore that I wanted Em to branch away from the Aftermath/Shady camp. Use producers like Just Blaze etc. and collab with other rappers in the game outside Shady.

Now - I prefer the old Em. I would like an album produced by the Bass brothers and Dre - but I'm just searching for a replica of the SSLP and you can't re-capture that sound 15 years on. As sad as it is - I think the era has passed.

Yeah this was me back in the day. But he waited too long until the biggest names in the game were drake and wayne :(

Oh am I the only one who thinks his new producers are the ones who pushed him to include the pop features on recovery? (everyone fricking brings up dido at this point, but he found the vocals on a remixed track and picked them through that, PLUS she wasnt a super-star so it was clearly skills over sales).

He never really ventured far out of his camp before when it came to features (rappers let along pop-stars), and the rappers these guys usually work with use these tactics to drive sales. Then im guessing after the massive success of LTWYL he's grown to love featuring pop-stars so now its a part of "him". :L

I don't mind some of the new producers he's worked with.

M-Phazes, Emile, Cardiak, Rick Rubin, Sid Roams, and Havoc have all done good shit with him. If he continues with these, that's cool.

I would love to see some Alchemist, No ID, Premier on that next album.

That would be good. Em' always blends in well with minimalist beats as well as some of that cinematic stuff he made on The Eminem Show and The 8 Mile Soundtrack. Dre does do the job, as well. They are the dynamic duo. I think one thing I liked about Em's early stuff was how clean the songs were. There wasn't much going on in the beat; so, you could turn the vocals down a little bit to make them sound less intrusive in the mix. Just look at Role Model.

Whew.

I also wanted to add that I do like some of the new production.

Rick does a fantastic job.

But seeing as he's dyed his hair again, I think Em's deep enough into sobriety that he can maintain himself around those surroundings again. Talking out of my ass, I am but still. I wanna hear some Em and Bass :(

Eminem always talks about how Dre "discovered" him...but Eminem was already "king of the underground" at this time and in the Unsigned Hype column. Most people in the local scene knew who he was.

The people who actually saw his potential were Jeff/Mark Bass. They deserve all the credit, since they discovered Eminem when he was a complete nobody and were probably the first people to ever notice his talent*. They only had the sound of him freestyling on radio to work with. Dre had an entire LP/EP to work with.

Not to mention that Dre's sacrifice/investment was almost nothing compared to theirs. Jeff and Mark were putting their livelihoods on the line because they thought this white kid in 1995 could turn out to be a genius...so they started making instrumentals for him and basically doing all his monkey work for barely any money (let's face it, Eminem was not making these beats...he was telling them what to do and they did all the challenging mixing/mastering work).

They risked everything because they knew it would pay off in the long run, and it did. It goes to show how lucky Eminem was to basically have two lackeys at his disposal early on. I don't think he was even paying these guys to do this shit.

If the "Eminem" thing didn't work out for Dre, he was still signed to Aftermath and he wouldn't lose anything significant. He still had Snoop Dogg. He certainly didn't "risk [his] career" for him as he suggests on INAD.

Of course, I could be wrong about some of these details. If so, let me know.

*On second thought, I should mention Proof noticed the talent before them. But I don't think Proof saw the bigger picture like these two did.

The thing is no matter how much they did for him at the time they had/still have their limitations & could never get Em to a point he could even afford to feel like an A artist. Em's said many times all other labels turned him down while Dre opened the door for him & made him a superstar. Ironically we know who Jeff & Mark are nowadays 'cuz of Dre too... as a matter of fact they were really grateful to Dre in the beginning. I have nothing against them but they can't offer anything to Em nowadays... obviously they've pretty much been irrelevant to the full since Em tuned his back on 'em.

Dre did put Em on... he gave Em the greatest exposure an artist could get at the time. Everything else is small talk.
