Eminem always talks about how Dre "discovered" him...but Eminem was already "king of the underground" at this time and in the Unsigned Hype column. Most people in the local scene knew who he was.
The people who actually saw his potential were Jeff/Mark Bass. They deserve all the credit, since they discovered Eminem when he was a complete nobody and were probably the first people to ever notice his talent*. They only had the sound of him freestyling on radio to work with. Dre had an entire LP/EP to work with.
Not to mention that Dre's sacrifice/investment was almost nothing compared to theirs. Jeff and Mark were putting their livelihoods on the line because they thought this white kid in 1995 could turn out to be a genius...so they started making instrumentals for him and basically doing all his monkey work for barely any money (let's face it, Eminem was not making these beats...he was telling them what to do and they did all the challenging mixing/mastering work).
They risked everything because they knew it would pay off in the long run, and it did. It goes to show how lucky Eminem was to basically have two lackeys at his disposal early on. I don't think he was even paying these guys to do this shit.
If the "Eminem" thing didn't work out for Dre, he was still signed to Aftermath and he wouldn't lose anything significant. He still had Snoop Dogg. He certainly didn't "risk [his] career" for him as he suggests on INAD.
Of course, I could be wrong about some of these details. If so, let me know.
*On second thought, I should mention Proof noticed the talent before them. But I don't think Proof saw the bigger picture like these two did.
