Nicki Minaj, Macklemore, Trinidad James, I consider them as pop artists. Sure they can rap but they're not making rap music, they aren't aimed at people who like rap, they are aimed at people who don't.

What you think doesn't really matter because they're rapping and therefore making rap music. If you think otherwise then you're just being an idiot.

No. They rap. There are rappers. Whatever reel hip-hawp headz consider them as is irrelevant.

They are rappers but not mcees.

Macklemore's 2005 album Language of My World is some of the deepest lyricism on this side of the grave. I guarantee it would change that opinion.

I thought the lyricism was decent, nothing great

Thank you.

The distinction between MC and rapper is a pretty modern thing. The thought behind it is that anyone can rap and thus be a rapper, but you have to be hiphop (or “real”) to be an emcee. Hip hop is a culture, it's a movement that refers to a lifestyle and there are things that an mcee can't talk about in hip hop, there are things that you can't do if you're an mcee.

And most hip hop heads consider rappers as pop artists because they don't respect that culture.

Macklemore is definitely a true emcee. Check out his 2005 album. It is so different than the Heist. Truly uplifting lyrics.

"THIS IS IT. When you spit you exist in that moment, and if you're sick with that gift then you rip it when you perform it. And all that shit that you lived begins to lift off your shoulders, and the audience - well, they get to experience what your soul is. The most amazing feeling rocking a crowd to your anthem, from the front to the back with their motherfuckin' hands up. Because I'm an emcee, won't be the first, won't be the last. Just another B-boy and I'ma die in my stance"

raw shit from Language of my World

"as I bare witness to existence, setting in the distance, for a sheer instant I become one with it."

so much gold on that album

I've already listened to it and thought it was average/decent.

I respect your opinion but it won't change his position in the game.. he'll never be considered as an mcee.

Except that he is. Anybody that tries to differentiate what they think is real hip-hop is an idiot and should probably stop speaking on the matter.

"In the late 1970s, the term MC (or M.C. in some uses),[6] stood for Master of Ceremonies. It became another alternative for a rapper, for the position's role within hip hop music and culture. An MC uses rhyming verses, pre-written or ad lib ('freestyled'), to introduce the DJ with whom they work, to keep the crowd entertained or to glorify themselves."

"MC can often be used as a term of distinction; referring to an artist with good performance skills.[8] As Kool G Rap notes, "masters of ceremony, where the word 'M.C.' comes from, means just keeping the party alive" [sic].[9][10] Many people in hiphop including DJ Premier and KRS-One feel that James Brown was the first MC. James Brown had the lyrics, moves, and soul that greatly influenced a lot of rappers in Hip-Hop, and arguably even started the first MC rhyme.[11][12]"

There isn't a definition of emcee you can find that doesn't apply to Macklemore loool

I think that, for other people, we should just use the word lyricist. Can't do much arguing there!
