Art of the peer pressure is great, but only on Trshady this song would become top song on the album. Sherane >>> Art of the peer pressure :coffee:

Sing About Me will always be seen as the best song followed by Money Trees.

There are two major contrasts between Sherane and Art of Peer Pressure.

I think with Sherane, he holds back some of the social commentary on how his actions are good/ bad. Is it better to be in love or be lead by lust? Is the fact that she was easy a bad sign? How is him doing all this for her so bad? Yes, issues like her family background are said "momma is a crack addict" but there is no personal reflection on the events of the story. It becomes more linear for me.

The Art of Peer pressure on the other hand deals with that inner struggle. Not only does he describe what they are doing (picking women, drinking, gangbanging, stealing, listening to music) he is concurrently commenting on all those aspects. He is acknowledging the power of music (Jeezy) and how it can be a negative influence. He is talking about how they may be in trouble with police. But how he can even be suffering on his own "a shot of henney" without external consequences.

The second difference is the use of similes and metaphors in the former and just well chosen descriptive words in the latter. Now, this is a matter of taste but i have always prefered the Kanye/ Eminem route vs the Jay Z (prime of course) of saying things in a simple and plain way but yet highly impactful. Looking for detail.

From the jump her asi look like a camel. I wanna ride like Arabian
vs
bad bitches with extensions
hood niggas with bad intentions

i prefer the latter. Its impactful to me.

And of course

"hungry for anything unhealthy and if you tell me nutrition is good for me I'll tell you to suck my dick and continue eating"

is one of my GOAT lines in hip-hop ever. Crisp, concise, funny as hell and deep all at once.

@Lance and Dead Prez- about Poetic Justice, i had so much Drake hate the time the album dropped i couldn't listen to it objectively. Now i think its neither amazing nor "ruined the song" but fits alright

@Lance- read the complex article "making of Good Kid Maad city" under the recipe and then maybe we can start having that argument. Kendrick said it HIMSELF and i remember not even once but at least 3 times.

I read it and I see what you mean but radios don't play regional songs anymore, it means that the recipe had no chance of becoming a hit.

btw, he said he wants to bring back the original west coast sound with his next album, and that shit would have been impossible without a successful first studio album that captures a "universal sound"

1) I'll stop voting if poetic justice doesn't make it to the final rounds

2) Sherane has better and more wordplays than Art Of The Peer Pressure, the imagery is A1

I see your point but the point of the first song isn't to give social commentary on his situation, it was to present the story from his point of view at the time.

"Love or lust, regardless we'll fuck cause the trife in us"

He wasn't trying to make a comment on whether this was good or bad, he was just showing us how he felt about Sherane from his eyes. Unsure, mainly because he was "seventeen, with nothing but pussy stuck on my mental." He was too busy trying to get some then think about the ramifications and reasons for his actions.

He also has the

"It's deep rooted, the music of being young and dumb
Its never muted, in fact it's much louder where I'm from"

Which is kind of social commentary on the mind state of kids his age at the time but also explains why he spent more time in the song describing Sherane and how he wanted to fuck her rather than explain the deeper thought process behind the actions and corresponding consequences. The song worked perfectly for what it was, introducing you to the facts without making too many judgements.

Also, why Drake's verse isn't even close to Kendricks.

Drake's verse was extremely generic lyrically. Just simple phrases with no depth to the thoughts. Once you've heard the verse once you've already heard all it has to offer. I mean his best line was the line that he took from Kendrick's first verse.

Kendrick on the other hand went extremely in depth and analyzed himself and the girl. His last verse is one of the best verses on the album

"If I told you that a flower bloomed in a dark room, would you trust it?
I mean you need to hear this
Love is not just a verb, it's you looking in the mirror
Love is not just a verb, it's you looking for it, maybe
Call me crazy, we can both be insane
A fatal attraction is common
And what we have common is pain"

Nothing Drake wrote even comes close to that tbh

@Lance- he had no idea what his next album really was going to be. Still doesn't hahaha. The Recipe BLEW on the net. On Hiphopdx it was the most played song that year. I remember how Big Boi's neighborhood was a big Fan. Breakfast Club. Charlagmaine was praising it. In fact, while he knew it would be big, he had no idea it would translate so well and was surprised once on how New York responded to it live.

@Class, i agree on how it is avoiding social commentary and the thought process behind his actions but i am saying that is what makes it inherently linear/ less complex/ easier to write than Art of Peer pressure. To be able to incorporate the other elements into the story requires a greater depth of writing.

Ok, you just had to pick out some of my fav lines from it! Haha. I still think he was over-reliant on metaphors on the track though. Contrast the way he describes Sherane on it to the way he describes Keisha on No- Make up.

Once someone makes an analogy, i mentally picture the thing being compared to. Maybe its my slower thought process but when that CONSTANTLY happens i find myself trying to catch up with the story after processing the words. Its quite frustrating really.

I'm just going to leave this here: http://www.refinedhype.com/hyped/entry/ ... e-kendrick

Drake finds his place on the perfect song and both of them elevated the song to another level, delete one verse and I don't listen to it anymore.

@momentsgolden.. You need 3 things if you want your song to be in the charts (billboard);

-Radio spins
-youtube views
-legal downloads.

How do you want a song to become a hit if only west coast radios play it ?

From what I have heard, it is now almost impossible to find a east coast radio that play west coast songs and vice versa. I know that the song had a lot of buzz when they released it but it was nothing but an internet buzz. You can compare the recipe to a Papoose song, a song that has a buzz on the internet, a song that local radios play a lot but I wish you good luck to hear it outside of Cali.

You should read this thread :y: http://www.thecoli.com/threads/ebro-hot ... op.118986/
Hot 97 is another famous station that recently jumped on the bandwagon and only play "universal" music

let me ask you a question then

Do you know a famous rapper who can top the charts with regional sounding hip hop ? when was the last time you saw a west coast type song in the top 40 of the billboard charts ? the only thing you can see is
Drake who makes hiphop/rnb music, Kanye West, Macklemore who appeals to both the hip hop and the pop scenes, Eminem, Kendrick with Swimming Pools or BDKMV (and it's very outkast-ish), J.Cole with Power trip (ft Miguel) or can't get enough ft trey songs, 2 chainz,..

Even jay-z can't top the charts with a typical NY song, all his hits are featuring Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Rihanna,...

I'm sorry but we're in the 2010s, you'll never see regional songs topping the charts anymore
