And yet Kanye's "just to stay relevant" music is still better than nearly anything else out there. Of course Nas is a better technical rapper. Nobody's disputing that. However, there's more to making a great album than just technical rapping, and Kanye tends to put out more entertaining albums.

Kanye making entertaining music isn't the point at all. People were criticizing him for saying he's going to make an album with 8 songs because being minimalist is cool........and somehow that means those people should never listen to illmatic again. One of the dumbest connections I've seen in a while. I'll be sure to remember these 8 songs were compared to illmatic when this shit comes out.

But Nas didn't make 9 songs because he thought it would be minimalist genius and super art. He made a great rap album. Kanye thinks it makes him cool somehow. It isn't even remotely the same. Kanye is putting music out because he knows he has to to keep his name big. Not comparable in any way.

Well he's making this album in a much shorter amount of time so of course it's going to be shorter. He said it took him 2 years to make All of the Lights and this entire album will be made in a year.

I honestly wish more rap albums were shorter like 8-10 songs, too many rap albums overstay their welcome. That's why I could always bump illmatic, RTJ, oh and no pointless stupid skits...

And fuck illmatic, Remain in Light by the talking heads has 8 songs so yeah, and it's not like they're 12 minute long prog rock ballads either.

Pretty much, also I can bet that illmatic wasn't "inteded" to be that short but lots of great things in art aren't "intended", so yeah let's just wait till it come out and judge it on it's own merits of it's shortness. Whether minimalist or maximalist, though I do believe once it gets too short he might as well release an EP instead.

That was one flawed part in his analogy was that jazz songs are usually much longer than rap songs same for Prog rock songs, so even if they're less songs they can be longer albums than ones with much more tracks...

The talking heads analogy still stands though, as it's only 40 minutes...

Or maybe he already planned out exactly what he wants to say and how long it will take him to say it? I'm not saying the album will definitely end up being 8 songs but it's not out of the picture. I've known for over a year I was gonna make an album that was only 9 songs because I planned out the entire thing in advance and now that it's almost over it's still going to be only 9 songs.

Also By The Throat is only 30 minutes long and that's a masterpiece
