What am I not understanding about MBDTF?

Postby Eedee » Dec 25th, '13, 10:19

So, I've read some stuff about this album on the forum, that it's some genius response to his critics.

But I've listened to the album a few times over, and I feel like I'm missing something. What makes this album so GOAT? I honestly prefer Graduation to this album, but I want to understand what everyone thinks is so special about it.

I'm not trying to be an ass, I'm trying to honestly understand. :y:

Yes. I need to look at it differently because obviously I'm not "getting" it.

I don't get it either. I mean I think it's a good album, even great, but people call it the GOAT hip hop album lmao. This album cannot possibly be GOAT, not even Kanye's best and Kanye himself is far from the best. Honestly I'd rather listen to Recovery lol there are only a few songs off this CD I even fuck with anymore whenever I am in the mood for his music. Just lately since the man has been acting a fool it has disenchanted me from his music. All the best songs on this album got voted off FIRST in the elimination game. Lmao.

I want to understand it as well, because this album honestly doesn't click to me. GKMC was so much better than this and honestly so was MMLP2. That's my honest opinion.

@ Kill You

It's not that I don't like this album, or that I think other albums are better (that isn't the issue here). My qualm is that I don't think I understand the "genius" of it, as some call it. I understand the songs and I do quite like the sound of the album, but I do think I'm missing whatever it is that makes it GOAT/great. I just want to get filled in on why it's considered. I can't word this without sounding like an asshole, but I'm genuinely curious.

Nah, there's a lot of genuine Kanye fans on here. :y:

In my simple opinion, the production is amazing. Every beat was rode perfectly by the artists on the songs. And I think the context in which the album was made (after the Swift Incident and the controversy that came with it, after his mother died, etc) was important for it, because he locked himself in Hawaii for a couple months to record, and I think all that stuff together created one particular moment of music creation that can't be ignored. Anyway...

The production, the lyrics expliciting some kind of decadence, self-doubt, anger towards the media, telling us about excess/wealth on a derogatory way, but at the same time with some pride. I think every song adds something to the other, and at the end the title makes total sense and we have an emotional and well-crafted piece of work.

gkmc is more praised on hip hop boards while mbdtf is more praised on pop boards.

And if you wanna talk about mmlp2 then it's safe to say that you're talking about 3 different audiences, it's like comparing Stankonia to Life After Death to an eminem album.
