other way around.
I don't remember the last time anyone had more pressure on a followup than Kendrick. I tend to hate Nas comparisons, especially Illmatic comparisons, but I do feel like Kendrick is in a somewhat similar situation. The difference is that GKMC was not just critically successful, it was commercially successful. He has proclaimed himself the best rapper, and many others in the media have too. And while everyone is cheering the kid, I feel like the knives will be out soon.
Just think: if it's not a concept album, niggas and cacs will automatically complain it's not as "cohesive" as GKMC. If it doesn't go plat, Drake and his sorry fans will rightfully be able to breath a sigh of relief and laugh at Kendrick's failure. The first single will be automatically compared to Swimming Pools. People will constantly be looking for a way to downgrade the album. It could be an undeniable masterpiece, but Kendrick's next album might be the new It Was Written. If the album is amazing, it will only be praised 5 or 6 years later.
I don't think it'll be impossible for him to top GKMC. Remember he has access to any beat he wants, Dre will no doubt exec produce, and unlike a lot of rappers...he's getting better. He's getting better at using his voice, and he's beginning to understand what works and doesn't work.
