Macklemore doesn't make music for himself. He represents a whole different kind of struggle. White kids with drug problems trapped in a public school system that sucks fucking balls. He also raps about how fucked up society is and how all we want to do is buy new shoes when there are people starving on the streets. He's just about as real as you get if you give him a chance.

You can't say one is more important than the other. There are just as many people who can relate to Macklemore as any other kind of hip-hop, if not more, and that's what makes him so big.

He's not using sales and charts as an argument. Y'all are so good to dismiss the points he make. The fact is that Macklemore has a nice writing style, he raps over dope beats and thinks of dope concepts. He knows how to make a great song without making it too poppy (because before Thrift Shop blew up, no one would have thought it would have THIS kind of success) and he makes chill and he makes music kids can relate to. On top of that, he seems like a genuinely nice human being with a lot of hip hop knowledge.

A label gives you record advances, they hype your album up and advertise it.
