I feel like Ranting because I agree with the OP for the most part, but i think Kanye deserves credit for his earlier work.
I used to be a HUGE Kanye fan. College Dropout played a role in opening my mind up more to the genre. I only listened to Hov, Nas, Em, and Tupac before College Dropout came out. I'm sure there were some others but those 4 were the most prominent in my music choices. Late registration was solid. Graduation was solid. I would put those 3 in my top 20 albums of all time.
Ever since his mom died, I just can't fuck with him. He is arrogant, and the quality of his music isn't even half of what it was. I thought MBDTF was trash. I think he made it for white people (and I'm white). It seems like the people who really love his new shit are all young and didn't grow up with the Kanye that I grew up on. The streets aren't fucking with anything post graduation.
With all that being said, I got baked out of my mind a few months back and forced myself to listen to Yeezus with my dre beats cranked all the way up. There is 4 songs on there that I like when I'm fucked up. Hold My Liqour, I am a god, I'm in it, and blood on the leaves. Guilt Trip has it's moments too. Even though these songs are alright, They can't come close to his earlier work. Songs like Family Business, Roses, Touch the Sky, I wonder, etc. are light years ahead of Kanye's skill level today. I tried to do the same with MBDTF...I got retarded one night and redownloaded it because I didn't want that bull shit taking up my precious hard drive space when it first dropped. I just can't get into it. So appalled is the only worthy song imo, and I like Blame Game for the most part but Chris Rock had to fuck it up to the point that I can't listen to it.
Now people may think that I'm one of those people who can't let go of the past. However, I grew up on Eminem and I think he is technically sharper and better than he ever has been. I just really respect the craft of being an MC and the technical aspects that come along with writing, producing, etc. I don't miss the old Eminem.
I think Kanye is diluting and destroying the craft that I love so much and I'm sick of everyone acting like he is some kind of genius for the shittiest work he has released to date. Also, the kilts and the masks are just really fucking weird. I find his whole obsession with high end fashion a little homosexual to say the least
