The sales climated wasn't that drastically different. When MMLP2 was released it was a 3 year difference, let's not exaggerate. It's not like people are comparing it to Encores/TES/MMLP sales weeks. It's only natural that people would compare a current album's performance with the last. And even if you don't want to compare sales weeks, if we compare chart runs, Recovery had a much better one than MMLP2. This album just isn't as successful so far. It's not that big of a deal, he's already had a long successful career and has nothing left to prove.

Recovery barely had any more promotion. If anything Relapse had the most promotion since his comeback, and it didn't even have all that much.

I'm guessing MMLP2 will go 4x Platnum in the US and 3x in the UK
Q. What did Eminem say to 50 when he caught him wearing a sweater?

It'll be lucky to go 3x plat in the US 2 years from now. It's not going 3x plat in the UK.

No it's probably gonna take a year for it to go 3x Platinum in the US.

Streaming affects a lot to the whole business. But you are right, Recovery did not have that much promotion yet killed all albums released that year and is still charting. I think if he is still in this game, he still wants to prove sth. So...I hope he could learn from this and improve next time.

It will be 3x Plat for sure... there is a chance for it to be 4x Plat eventually but at this point that depends on a lotta factors so that's very questionable for now. The sure thing is they definitely have to keep going with the singles... all of them got plaques & were successful to a degree so I'm sure a new one will at least get a gold one as well.

& The music industry has obviously declined a great deal if we talk about sales... Rev talked about it in details so I don't feel like bringing that up again. There is no way to compare Recovery & MMLP2 like they were dropped by two different artists in the same week... as simple as that.

If they don't release another powerful single, then it ain't never gonna reach 3x platinum.

They definitely will if the sales decline to a point where the album would be stuck so early... that's when even Interscope would push for it & will spend on it.
You pointed out recently that the album hasn't even had a single after its release & that speak volumes... practically this new strategy helped differently as all 4 singles had plaques & their sales are great overall & left so much space for others too.
I'm not sure if Em will have a very powerful next single from the album from now on but I'm sure they will release more singles & that at least one of them is gonna earn another gold plaque at the least & most of it will help the album's momentum to get to 3x Plat.

The Guardian: Album sales fall to lowest ever in US

album fans, get the tissues out: weekly US sales figures have dipped to their lowest level since Nielsen SoundScan first began logging music sales, in 1991. During the week ending Sunday 12 January, only 4.25m units (CD and vinyl) were sold across the US – exceeding the previous lowest figure of 4.49m, from the week ending 27 October 2013.

Album sales have been in steady decline since 2010, when digital sales and downloads first began to overtake their analogue counterparts. In the US, annual album sales fell by about 12% in 2010, recovering slightly a year later when Adele's 21 stormed the charts to become 2011's bestselling album overall.

In 2012, album sales dropped by 4% – even with another bumper year for Adele – then dropped by 8% in 2013. Weekly sales of less than 5m units was rare before 2010, when retailers shifted less than 5m albums per week on a total of four occasions. Last year, however, weekly US album sales fell below 5m units a total of 18 times.

According to early January data, digital album and track downloads also declined over the course of 2013 – for the first time since 2001.

Thanks again King Lance...

I think it was very clear MMLP2 sales should not be compared to the ones of Recovery 'cuz of the many obvious reasons but here I go with something even more obvious.

But Recovery was a much more pop friendly album for sure, it makes sense it would sell more. I am just surprised its already at 30k weekly, it took Recovery 6 months till it reached that, MMLP2 reached it in 2 months.

Please tell me you were kidding... you just can't be serious.
11% up in 2010 & 12% up in 2011 make huge difference... Don't you think? Plus that's just dry statistics & there are many other factors too...

What are you talking about? Album sales didn't increase in 2010 or 2011. ChickaChicka is right, it's still a fair comparison.
