The Guardian: Album sales fall to lowest ever in US

Postby King Lance » Jan 19th, '14, 22:28

album fans, get the tissues out: weekly US sales figures have dipped to their lowest level since Nielsen SoundScan first began logging music sales, in 1991. During the week ending Sunday 12 January, only 4.25m units (CD and vinyl) were sold across the US – exceeding the previous lowest figure of 4.49m, from the week ending 27 October 2013.

Album sales have been in steady decline since 2010, when digital sales and downloads first began to overtake their analogue counterparts. In the US, annual album sales fell by about 12% in 2010, recovering slightly a year later when Adele's 21 stormed the charts to become 2011's bestselling album overall.

In 2012, album sales dropped by 4% – even with another bumper year for Adele – then dropped by 8% in 2013. Weekly sales of less than 5m units was rare before 2010, when retailers shifted less than 5m albums per week on a total of four occasions. Last year, however, weekly US album sales fell below 5m units a total of 18 times.

According to early January data, digital album and track downloads also declined over the course of 2013 – for the first time since 2001.

It's certainly slowing up, but another couple of singles may rectify that situation

Since when was giving away 1,000,000 copies considered "legit platinum"? Let's make that 4 artists. ;)

Except that MMLP2 is obviously a superior album. I believe it will outsell Recovery by a long shot.

I know my city isn't big (a suburb of ATL), but I hang around with hip-hop heads and a lot of hip-hoppers in Atlanta, and the consensus is that MMLP2 was Eminem's crowning album.

Not to say that it was better than MMLP or TES (that would cause too much controversy), but this far along in his career, to display such lyrical prowess while still managing to be the best selling hip-hop artist of the year (by far) is quite a feat for an artist that debuted 15 years ago.

Well, shit is just evolving.

These phagitz is terrified of change because it's their bread and butter, which is understandable... but as with all elements of human society and culture - it will just improve, as with all evolution: it will improve.

It looks bleak now in relation to a system which was, failing, but it's fading.

And, better solutions and systems will emerge, and we'll all be highly thankful in retrospect.

Kanye said it himself, he makes his money off his tours. Em performs 5-6 times a year and gets his 12m, his albums only earn him about 5m a year.
Wouldn't be surprised if Em's next album doesn't break x2 platinum in less than 5 months.

I agree for the most part... just that if Em toured more his albums would sell a bit more too. He could have helped a lot MMLP2 if he did some more shows, let alone if he did like a few bigger events with that same name.
