The Roots?

Postby Rafael » Jan 20th, '14, 18:55

I wantto give the Roots a try and see if I love their music. I've heard a few songs, and really liked them, but I'm just curious to see on which one of their projects I should start off on.

I've heard several people tell me that Undun is amazing, and it has a lot of critical praise, so I was gonna start there, but I just need yalls opinion on where to actually start. Any help is greatly appreciated :y:

Black Thought is in my top 5, all time. Amazing lyricist and writer.
Undun and How I Got Over is definitely a great start. Everything they've been putting out since Game Theory (2006) - Undun (2011) has more of a social/political message, and much more attention is paid to production. However, all of the mentioned albums are feature heavy (most of them being Roots affiliates: Dice Raw, P.O.R.N, and Truck North).
Regardless, all of the albums are great. If you are going to go that route, just go backwards.
Undun, How I Got Over, Rising Down, Game Theory.... and so on.
Their 90's material definitely had a different vibe, though the social commentary always existed. My favorite album of theirs is probably Things Fall Apart.

You are making a great decision N-R-G, The Roots are low key GOAT.

Pretty much this... plus the fact The Roots are/have always been one of a kind group.
The only reason why they aren't always mentioned as one of the greatest groups of all time is 'cuz they only have one vocal artists in it.
