The Grammys Rap Committee Didn’t Want Macklemore in Their Awards Categories

Grammy intrigue: According to an unnamed AP source, the rap committee of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences tried to disown Macklemore & Ryan Lewis from their awards categories. "Most" members of the rap committee felt that the "Thrift Shop" and "Same Love" duo shouldn't qualify for rap nominations "because of their success on mainstream radio and their appeal in the pop world." This is not a new idea, in the sense that Macklemore is often described as a rapper for people who don't usually listen to rap music. But he does, in fact, rap, which is why the motion was vetoed by the general Grammys committee in a "landslide."
"It's not that they don't think he's a rapper," said the source. "It's just that when you're trying to protect categories and someone has become popular, it should be judged as much. ... Where does their music exist? Who are their fans?" Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are nominated for seven awards, including Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance, Best Album, and Best Song. Also worth pointing out: If Macklemore & Ryan Lewis should win Best Song, they would be the first rap artists ever to do so.

I was talking to Pete earlier this week, one of the 150 grammy voters and he pretty much confirmed what most of us already know.

macklemore is not one of their options for aoty, it's basically between Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar & Taylor Swift and like he said, they see Macklemore as the justin bieber of hip hop and as you already know, Justin bieber will never win a Grammy.

Pete and most of the other voters are aware hip hop fans don't fuck with Macklemore's album.

The heist wasn't even a hip hop album before its success

The Heist is more "hip hop" than Yeezus and Nothing Was The Same, both which are nominated for Rap Album of the Year.

Please enlighten me as to why The Heist isn't a hip-hop/rap album....

And for the record, i'm a Macklemore fan and take him serious, much more than artists like Kanye West and Drake.

Lol Rattle should just shut the fuck up about The Heist not being Hip Hop. Macklemore has always been a rapper, and The Heist is him rapping. I don't see how it's less Hip Hop than any other album being released this year. Macklemore raps over great production, is that why it's not Hip Hop? Is it because it's not boom bap? Because the production is once again very reminiscent of MBDTF at parts and I don't see anyone discussing about how MBDTF is pop.

Ugh I hate double standards
