What if they intended on giving Mack AOTY, but still felt GKMC desreved "best hip hop". If that's the case, they weren't "protecting the category" because they thought negatively of him, but rather that they loved his album and just didn't want to rob Kendrick of the best seriously hip hop oriented album.
Everyone assumed this was hating on Macklemore. But what if their thinking was identical to his own. Kendrick undeniably had the best "hip hop album". By removing Macklemore from the hip hop category, they could give him AOTY in a justifiable way without the nonsensical nature of the AOTY not even winning it's own genre. Make sense?
Or maybe not.

I got you
But why would the AOTY, which is a rap album, not be the RAOTY?
It would be like NWTS getting RAOTY and GKMC being the AOTY
Of course, in this case you can't use the same arguments you used, since they wouldn't be protecting the rap category by giving it to a that's 'more rap' but worst (in their view) to the AOTY
But the logic about it being weird the same
stylzjaw wrote:The hip hop community seems to be fully behind Kendrick for RAOTY but his album is just too "hip hop" for the AOTY category. Many magazines/critics/fans say Kendrick deserves AOTY but will probably not win it because the album doesn't have the crossover, it only appeals to the rap audience.
2 "hip hop" artists have already won AOTY but it was because of the crossover: Lauryn Hill & Outkast with a non hip hop album (The Love Below)

also, Babel won AOTY last year but lost in its own genre category because the support of the community wasn't there.
Arcade Fire won AOTY in 2011 and lost in their own genre category.
