Hip-hop is great, but part of what made the hip-hop community what it was is the fact that it was the backbone of the entire culture during its come up. Now, after eminem, pac, jay z, etc bringing hip hop to the world masses, the hip-hop community is now more like a club than an actual guideline for the music. Macklemore is so huge worldwide that it doesn't matter what the rap community says about him.
The "community" is being injected with millions of new people every year whose opinions count towards the consensus of the "hip hop community" just the same as anyone elses. So, in time, the definition of hip-hop itself will change. Eventually people will just have to embrace the new niche macklemore has created and consider it a part of the genre.
Be careful what you wish for, hip hop is so big now that it has a mind of its own.
