When Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' names were called as winners for "Best Rap Album" at the 2014 Grammy Awards, the Internet exploded with criticism as rap fans everywhere were shocked and appalled. Chief amongst their gripes was that "The Heist," Macklemore's pop-centric album, beat out Kendrick Lamar's universally recognized hip hop album "good kid M.A.A.D. City."

But should fans have been that surprised? A closer look at the history of the Grammys' "Best Rap Album" category -- and what typically happens when white rappers are nominated -- reveals an interesting trend.

The Huffington Post created the below infographic to highlight a few fun facts about what has become one of the Grammy's most controversial awards:

Kanye West must be mad, he has been saying this since forever but nothing happened. Kendrick loses an award and it's the total shitstorm

If anything, Kanye would be happy cause Kenny and Kanye probably had a LOT of conversations on the road about things like this.

Gotta say tho, Mack's gotta feel really shitty cause it ain't even his fault.

This is incredibly biased and skewed. To show a chart detailing the percentage of white artists winning grammies since '96, but fail to acknowledge that every single time except for one that white artist was the SAME GUY WINNING AGAIN is just stupid. If Em won over and over and over again, and no other white rappers until Mack did, that isn't racism. That's eminemism. Seriously.

That would mean Eminem is the only white rapper who makes great music and deserves to win.

In order for a white rapper to gain this much recognition he has to be really, really good. Macklemore is really really good. (fuck your opinions) Since eminem, no white rapper has gained this much attention. There are still way more black people who have won rap awards, and black people have beaten white people too. This is getting ridiculous. There are lots of black AND white people in America and they all like hip-hop. With that knowledge the shit looks incredibly even to me.

:facepalm

Also, what is the point of that infographic... what trend?

That Eminem has dominated since he's been out?

Is anybody seriously saying SSLP, MMLP and TES were NOT the best rap albums those years?

He lost to Kanye for Encore... is anybody saying THAT is not accurate too? If it was just because he's white, why wouldn't he have won for Encore over Kanye?

2009 didn't have many great big rap albums either, Relapse was one of the best, and what was his competition for 010?... You can't ignore Recovery's dominance of 2010 either.

By and large - the albums which dominate are the ones that win.

Kendrick's album was acclaimed, it did not dominate. Eminem's albums all dominated and so did Macklemore's, he had gigantic worldwide songs and global attention and discussion of the work...

That is not fucking racism.

Do black rappers just think they should win all the time? And if they don't it's automatically racism? If it was just about being white then why the fuck hasn't Paul Wall or Bubba won any? Seriously, shut the fuck up. Why didn't Yela win? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. There is no trend of racism there, there's a trend of awarding the best rapper (Eminem) awards for amazing or dominant albums, and one win for ONE other white rapper, yeah WOW, how incredibly bias  Stupid fucking American morons and their obsession with race. Fuck off.

it did.

Kendrick didn't have a top 10 hit single but his album sold almost as much as Macklemore's, and it's still moving units as we speak. Like the artists, magazines, producers and people are saying, Macklemore only deserved to win Song Of The Year.

a rapper explained the selection process.

basically, ballots are sent to voting members of the association with the final nominees in all categories. The Grammy experts are allowed to vote for everything, even if they aren't familiar with the genre :facepalm

This is probably the first time the hip hop fans are pissed off that an album didn't win an award, that shit will be seen as the biggest robbery in the history of the grammys, or probably the second biggest after Tupac-All Eyez On Me
