For example, I heard a line in Don't Flop recently: if you're not careful, I'll start doing an associative wordplay scheme about Arab culture. Don't Mecca me do it.
You can't blame them, really. It's like nearly every single angle and creative insult has been done before in a 1-on-1 acapella format so the next step is to start taking the piss out of the culture itself. But the fact that this meta humor is becoming more popular almost signals the death of the culture.
Very true about the in-jokes, too. I loved the Grindtime years when The Saurus just did a bunch of Asian jokes to Dumbfoundead and it was accessible. Now battlers in Don't Flop make jokes like (quoting Cruger here): you're shorter than Math Hoffa's second against Shotty. Of course, the people in that venue have seen that battle but a lot of people watching on Youtube haven't. In jokes are lame, but again, can't blame 'em. They have to fill up 3 rounds of material.
The lame thing is that if Kid Twist were to battle a fat guy and just make a bunch of fat jokes he would not get much reaction these days. "Fat jokes are a played out ANGLE, bro. You need to evolve your corny jokes and start doing some bars. Or make jokes ABOUT fat jokes...that's what's cool these days."
