Hah.
I just noticed Em mentions himself in every song.
He literally says "I" in every song, self absorbed fuck.
In MMLP too.
Probably his entire discography.
Eight albums about himself.
Wow.
There's cohesion for you.

:confusion:

It's by far his most cohesive album, in my opinion.

I'd say that it's TES, but I know what you mean. MMLP is without a doubt my favourite album by him and one of the best of all time. The thing is, I don't think that MMLP2 in contrast to MMLP is less cohesive. On the original you go from Kill you to a track like Stan. Two totally different tracks and two songs that by listening to it don't really fit. If you look at the album alltogether it makes sense, obviously, but there are so many tracks that normally if you compare it to others don't really fit sonically and flow wise. Like Base said, Kill You, Criminal and Who knew do have the same vibe, but then you get to a song like Kim or Stan that imo don't really fit in there for some reason. For Kim it's obvioulsy the flow/voice and the vibe. There is really no song as dark as Kim on there except maybe Stan. If you look at the album as a whole, they fit together, but if you take these songs and listen to them one apart from the other, you wouldn't really think that they come from the same album. Well for most songs atleast.

This is what I meant Base, sure Kill You and Criminal fit kinda. No doubt. They do sound like they are from the same "family". But does Criminal sound like Stan ? Does it feel like family lol. This same argument can be applied to MMLP2 too. RoR, So Far and Love Game sound like they are from the same family too. They all have that rock/rap feeling that we got from Em over the years, at the same time they sound unique as fuck and liek something that Em hasn't done before.

Sure, RoR and The monster don't fit together that much if you put one next to the other, but in the context of the album they do. Just like with MMLP.

You are taking this cohesive shit way too serious. MMLP, if we are being real, didn't sound as cohesive as people make it out to be, but as an album, in the entirety, it does. This is how I feel about MMLP2 too and why I consider it more cohesive than Relapse thb .. and besides, Relapse is packed with fillers.

Same happens with other rappers, now they dismiss rappers like Rakim, Nas, Big Pun...etc because to the internet they were just "lyricists" and didn't really bring anything new to the table.

Just ask teenagers who they like better and why, Nas or Jay. You'll be amazed by their reasoning.

Many people see SSLP as your typical underground album totally neglecting its wit and genius :shakehead:

EDIT: The tone of the album make "Kill You" and "Stan" fit, I don't know what you're talking about.

They never have reasons. It's the same with a lot of sports. People just try to fit in with popular opinion, and popular opinion has become "Eminem is lame".
i don't know who you're talking about, but they seem like mindless biased drones that you shouldn't be associating with. no open-minded human being is going to allow their opinions to be formed in correspondence with the general consensus. that's how democracies crumble, it's extremely important to voice how you feel about a topic, not how everyone else feels.

Cohesion doesn't have any granted preferential value in the quality of an album because an album, in its essence, is only just a collection of songs. Eminem's whole idea about making an album is to 'balance things out', which works for him and makes him a standout artist of today. He feels the need to play various characters and that makes it really hard for him to keep constraint on his vision and make it just about one sound, one concept. But, his method is to test his characters through many different situations.

For example, on SSLP, he's playing the zany, crazy psychopathic character exaggerated for comedic value through stories like Brain Damage and As the World Turns but he doesn't shy off blurring the lines with himself in Rock Bottom and 97B&C. Then, in MMLP, his aim was to show who Marshall Mathers really was, without any glorification or demonization;just Marshall Mathers exactly as a person with all his imperfection and perfection on display. His raps are conversational and life-like. As the Bass Brothers have said, they tried to make the sounds rough and less polished. But again he doesn't shy off doing songs like Kill You and Criminal to show how the lines between his characters get blurry. It's only a matter of who gets to take the centre stage. On TES, he plays a romanticised, tragic anti-hero, like in a 'show', the music is now dramatic and his raps are more focused on melody, aiding the romantic ideals he set on this album. But here as well, he does things like 'Without me' and 'Drips' to balance things out.

The pattern here is that he doesn't make 'concept albums' but 'character albums'. His albums are more 'Sherlock Holmes', 'Dorian Grey' than 1984. So, placing value on the traditional sense of cohesion in terms of concepts is not the best way to look at Eminem albums.

I know that it fits, I know what he was aiming with that album and with that song in particulary. The point was that, as standalone tracks, if you lets say, put stan next to Bitch Please 2, it wouldn't make sense. Atleast sonically.
