Is he saying to Hailie "When I'm gone" as in when he is away from home touring or when he dies? Because of the music video I always just assumed that he was meaning when he's away from home/on tour and can't spend his time with her but "Just know that I'm looking down on you smiling and I didn't feel a thing" < This seems to back up that he was actually talking about when he dies and is looking down on her from heaven.
I know he was in a real slump in 2005 but it just seems pretty weird how he is telling his 9 year old daughter not to mourn for him when he dies. (made especially so by the fact that he almost did 2 years later) Did he know that he was eventually going to kill himself with what he was taking or was he wanting the pills to kill him ie. Suicide and that's why he assures her he "never felt a thing"?
I suppose a case could also be made that it's a farewell to the fans since he was thought to be "retiring" at this point but it just seems a whole lot darker than that. Even Em himself said in an interview that he was too hard on himself in this song. I think this song clearly depicts what kind of mind state he was really in back then...this is Em at his very lowest imo - His darkest song to date.
Thoughts?
Feel free to facepalm this thread btw
