Back when he first came out, he was just trying to overcompensate his awkward shyness with a lot of silliness, a common trick amongst the socially awkward of us.

But you could see his awkward and true quiet demeanor back then too, it was more like he was trying to live up to his image which he had just created - not saying the silliness isn't him as well, as I believe it is, but right now I believe we're seeing a more realistic portrayl of just him as a human being, how he actually is. In a way he's more confident, as he has the confidence to just be relaxed and quiet and not freak out about it.

Even 1999 and 2004 Em seemed like two different people. So much about him changed in those 5 years, both artistically and as a person in interviews.
Down to maturity or drugs or whatever - he changed so much.

The years of heavy drug use alone would have a serious effect on your brain function. He probably is chemically different than he was before the years of drug abuse, I'm sure he feels as different as he seems to us. Must be a weird feeling
