Even though I really enjoyed his comeback, him trying to bring it back to the old days is annoying.

When Relapse was released, he said how he was going to the old Slim Shady style of his first two albums.

During his Recovery interviews, he said he went back to his old albums to try to emulate the feeling that he used to bring to his music.

Now during MMLP2, he fucking calls it MMLP2 and dyes his hair! Ok Em, you finally did it, please move forward now.

Contrast what Eminem does to what Kanye does. Kanye keeps moving along, he doesn't try to relive the past, if you want the chipmunk sound, you have to go to his old stuff. I sort of blame Eminem's fans because most are afraid of anything new, but Kanye's fans are the same way but that doesn't stop him. It's the artists job to create something new; making something you know your fans will like isn't taking any risk, and really isn't "art" to me.

If Eminem want to bring Slim Shady to this time period, it would have seemed a lot more authentic to lean into the industrial hip hop sound that has been on Clppng or Death Grips, it would have worked so much better than trying to rehash what was edgy 15 years ago. It's like watching an old horror movie, what used to be scary is now just kind of a joke.

And what I forgot to make a point of, if you keep trying to recreate what people are nostalgic for, your new stuff will never live up to it. It doesn't matter if it is technically on par or even better, people will always place it below the originals. But if you keep innovating, each piece of your work will have it's own nostalgic factor that doesn't have to compete with the older stuff. To bring up Kanye again, nobody looks at his newer works (Yeezus, MBDTF, 808s) as a lesser version of what came earlier, because they are so much different, they exist on their own. With Eminem, his newer works (Relapse, Recovery, MMLP2) definitely are seen as lesser works than his earlier ones, and Eminem is the one who set up the comparisons.

the reason theyve been set up that way is because Eminem had a hiatus. Not only do those albums sound nothing like them, he never said he was trying to emulate the old stuff. For Recovery all he said was he was trying to see how to make his songs feel like something again, cuz he felt he missed that mark on relapse.
