Say I had GalaxyS3, which currently runs Ice Cream Sandwich OS. Would I be able to upgrade that OS to KitKat or even "L" once that is released laster on this year, or would I need to buy a new phone to get the latest OS?

so you essentially have to "jailbreak" it, to get the new OS? that's awfully stupid...

HeySamantha wrote:It just seems so strange that you don't get a "OS Update Available" notification and get the newest version of Android. Of all the things these phones can do, that's something they don't/can't do.
What does it mean to "root" it, that's so different from jailbreaking? It means to override the original settings. Isn't that what you'd be doing to get the newest OS on an old Android phone, since it won't do it automatically for you, for free?
HeySamantha wrote:I know, but I'm talking specifically about OS upgrades on older-ish phones.. like the S3

it can be quite a pain in the ass if the phone isn't a nexus.
