You are leaving out country music and swing though, they played a role in birthing rock music as well. And so what if Soul is a mix of those 3 genres? The mix of those genres didn't occur till AFTER rock n roll music was developed... therefore soul, as a genre, has absolutely nothing to do with the origins of rock music.King Lance wrote:JRHernande wrote:Rock music was birthed by Jazz, Gospel and Blues that appeared before Rock. The name just came later, At one point it was impossible to hear Jazz without Blues or Blues without Gospel. The name came out later but the music was already there
Ok.... show me a record that is considered soul from the 1940s.

most songs by Billie Holiday
She was one of the first artists to mix grooves, blues, jazz & rnb in her songs, basically all the elements that played a role in the evolution of Soul.
Soul is just a name to describe what was the popular black music at the time. Sure it was more popular in the 50/60 but some artists were already making what you could call "soul" music... it wasn't just RNB or just blues, all of them shit were on the same song.
Honestly you can download Billie Holiday full catalog or listen to her old songs from the 30/40s. She wasn't just making jazz music, it was always jazz with other genres.
Billie Holiday's music was pretty standard jazz though, especially her earlier stuff. She began experimenting with other genres later on in her career....
If you think that is soul music, then you don't know what soul music is.... as it clearly is more than just "black music at the time" lol... funk was around in the 60s as well, does that mean funk can be categorized as soul since, according to you, it encompasses black music at the time?![]()
there were certain musical elements that made soul music what it was, it was a genre not a term. An example of an umbrella term used to describe black music would be "urban music" as it was been heavily associated with African American music... but never soul. c'mon man....
I'm done.
Carry on with discussions on Shady XV, if Lance wishes to discuss this further, he can start a thread or PM me.
