jay-z: really one of the best, or over hyped?

Postby spitz » Dec 31st, '06, 21:33

theres a lot of talk, im sure you've heard the quote, "whos the best emcees:biggie, jay z, nas". But if you were to read his lyrics, you would see he cant even be compared to a pun, or a em, as most of you know, em outshined jay horribly on jay's own song, plus , ems verses were pre done with royce, so you'd figure jay-z would live up to his legend status, on such a monstorous collab with em...but he didnt.

so my question to yall is: is jay really a legend? or jus over hyped?

He's a Legend for the level of success and respect he has earned in hip-hop. But, in my eyes I agree with you, he's nowhere near the best lyricist. Nas absolutely murdered him with "Ether", Eminem killed him on his own shit, lol. Eminem, Rakim, Pun, Big,L, Pac, Nas, all way better than Jay-Z. But, unfortunately in most cases, being better doesn`t always translate into success.

My Verdict: Doesn`t deserve to be known as the Michael Jordan of rap, that's seriously bullshit. Heard 2 people call him that (One was Eminem :confusion: ).

i was talkin aside from success and stuff like that. theres certain verses hes done, like "is that yo chick" and "big pimpin"....but other than that, hes not really all what people make him out to be. i asked this because i heard "the bluepriny" was a jay clsasic...but its nothin special.

and fuck yes, nas murdered him with Ether.

and if your talkin level of succeess, then 50 could be a legend:movie, clothing line, record label, book, and own vitamin water....when you have your own vitamin water, your somethin special in this world.

but if hes one of the best, then somebody like proof is god of rap.

if you ask me, i think jay WAS the medium between lyrical and mainstream....he was lyrical, but not so much where people couldnt understand him, but he rhymed about cars, money and jewlery. but then if thats the case....then pun could be jay z cuz pun could write the illest, most lyircal rhymes ever, then do "still not a player".

this topic wouldntve been created if jay z wasnt crown lyrical king by people...cuz as we all know...he's far from it.

Living legend because no one in the rap game has stepped up their flow and writing style as much as Jay-Z has. People say his worst album was Vol. 1 In My Lifetime, even if that was his "worst" album, it was still good. who else can have a an album like that. when MTV did their best emcee list and Jay was #1, i was skeptical that was until they explained why he deserved that #1 spot. he seems to be moving along w/ the times but still keeping it Jay-Z. he can dumb down his flow and make it mainstream or switch it up and make you think. his shit never got stale. every rapper wants to be NaS and have ill flows and tehy also want to make Diddy money, why not combine the 2...thats where Jay-Z comes in

people hate on jay too much, especially people that dont know nothing about him.

jay has in my opinion 3 classic worthy albums.

Blueprint, Black Album, Reasonable Doubt.

Many artists release only about 4 albums in they lifetime, and not all of them are great.

Jay z has like 10 cd's, out of which not all are good, but he still comes up with shit put out for the fans.

Legend, nuff said. I didnt like Jay-z till i turned 17 myself, theres just a certain vibe he has that u need to grow to love. Quit hating.

i think he is over hyped... i preferred him around the time when hard knock life came out... rite now, i think he has to compete with other rappers to be the best at the moment... i dont listen to jay that much now.. but no doubt, he is a good rapper and will go down for bein one of the best

i respect him as an aritst or more like a commercial money making machine with the ability to pick beats, production ear, and being around for so long but w/ out a doubt he's over rated as an emcee.

"renegade" and "lost ones" are good examples.
the latter made me cringe.
girl drama should be left up to the man who does it best in the game creatively, lyrially, adn delivery wise. eminem.

I can't judge as i haven't heard all of his material.

I think he's pretty good, but i don't think he's the Michael Jordan of rap.
