Does Hip Hop Truely Live In The South?

Postby IceAxe » Apr 28th, '07, 19:10

Not sure how many of you may have read the latest issue of The SOurce, but in it, there's an article about the Southern rap scene.

It brought up some interesting points[good arguement, but not convincing to me]. While people say the south is killing hip hop, you can see all the aspects of it there.

Here's the watered down version of the ways The Source says hip hop lives in the south

MCing: DJ Unk and others "Move the Crowd" with instructional dance tracks. Which brings me to....

Dance: Could the wave of dances from the south be the next step in the evolution of break danceing?

Graffiti: Non-southern based clothing companies are producing clothes wih southern sayings written in graffti. And all the neon, car paint and shit functions like graffiti: letting people know who your crew is,and where they are

DJing: DJ Screw bringing the 'chopped and screwed' sound.

What's your all's opinions on this?

but not many ppl listen to that shit, so for hip hop and rap to live the main stream shit needs to be good quality. imo it will never happen. eventually it will happen, but not soon enough. theres just too many ppl doing the music and ppl buying it but someone will eventually wake up and see the problem and change it
Life is just one big lesson

YOUNG JEEZY LYRICS

"My Hood"

[2x]
Every time I do it I do it for my hood
And every time I do it I do it for yo hood
And every time I do it I do it for they hood
It's understood I do it for the hood

The streets love jeezy and I love 'em back
If I still had the work I'll front you a sack
It's all gravy still reaching wit my words
And make 'em feel good on the first and the third
Take you back when I was sixteen wits a bankroll
Posted on a corner like a light pole
They used to call us track stars
Before they even stopped we ran to dem cars
And everybody on the block got the same agenda
Hustle from January til the end of December
Wasn't smokin purple then it was more like bobby brown
On that hen straight dog got a nigga drinking brown (7/11 nigga you know)
You know 10 to 4 shake 'em up talk shit get my drink and let 'em go
Even when I'm on the road the gangstas stay in touch
Why you think they love me so much (ha ha!)

[Chorus]

I'm talking bout summertime cookouts and wintertime flights
It ain't nothing we hearing shots all night
Ford Taurus pulls up everybody run
White boys jump out pointing wit they guns (5-0, 5-0)
Ford Taurus leave everybody came back
Hope dem boyz didn't find my sack
Real recognize real I suppose
I guess that's why the gangstas be at all my shows
Got the deal nothing changed but my clothes
Still catch me in the jects fuckin wit dem hoes (projects!)
Like coo-coo cal
Lord I wish mad Lou could see me now
Wish gold mouth was there wish mailman was free
A lot of niggaz crossing over dog no not me
Closest I been in the commercial's when I watch TV
And everybody know I rep these streets faithfully

[Chorus]

Ford Taurus pull up everybody run
White boys jump out pointing wit they guns
Ford Taurus leave everybody came back
Hope dem boyz didn't find my sack

[Chorus]

NAS LYRICS

"Rewind"

Listen up gangstas and honeys with ya hair done
Pull up a chair hon' and put it in the air son
Dog, whatever they call you, god, just listen
I spit a story backwards, it starts at the ending

The bullet goes back in the gun
The bullet hole's closin this chest of a nigga
Now he back to square one
Screamin, "Shoot don't please"
I put my fifth back on my hip
It's like a VCR rewindin a hit
He put his hands back on his bitch
My caravan doors open up
I jumped back in the van and closed it shut
Goin reverse, slowly prepared
My nigga Jungle utters out somethin crazy like, "Go he there"
Sittin in back of this chair, we hittin the roach
The smoke goes back in the blunt, the blunt gets bigger in growth
Jungle unrolls it, put his weed back in the jar
The blunt turns back into a cigar
We listen to Stevie, it sounded like heavy metal fans
Spinnin records backwards of AC/DC
I give my niggas dap, jump out the van back first
Back upstairs, took off the black shirt
I'm in the crib with the phone to my ear
Listen up so y'all can figure out the poem real clear
The voice on the phone was like, "Outside right we"
So with my mouth wide, holdin my heat
Bullets I had plenty to squeeze, plenty for ya
'Cause Jungle said, "Block your on enemies the"
Hung up the phone, then the phone rang
I'm laid in the bed thinkin 'bout this pretty young thing
Who left, she came back, her clothes just fell to the rug
She fell to my bed and gave me a hug
I told her, "No hell"
She talkin 'bout, "Me kiss"
Bobbed her head then spit the nut back in my dick
Started suckin with no hands, a whole lotta spit
Then got up and put her bra back on her tits
Got fully dressed and told me, "Stressed really I'm"
Picked up her Gucci bag and left her nigga behind
Walkin through the door, she rang the bell twice
I vomited Vodka back in my glass with juice and ice
The clock went back from three, to two, to one
And that's about the time the story begun
That's when I first heard the voicemail on the cell
It said, "Son we found that nigga we gotta kill"
[Message Beep]
Ay yo son, ay yo son, you hear me, you hear me?
Listen man, this dude right on the block, right now, man
I found him, right now, I see him right now!
Let's kill him)
[Message Beep]
"Yo, this Nas, leave it. Peace"

[Trick Daddy]

Get ghost and kill every bitch close to you
And you probley gone kill me if I ain't careful
Probley gone damn near me if I ain't careful
Now you fucking with the wrong nigga
I'll follow you home nigga, ready to pull the motherfucking trigger
Cause I ain't fucking with nobody, owe nobody
Need nobody but my shottie
See all my ex-friends was ex-cons, most of them dead and gone
Therefore I'm ridding for 'em
I'm putting holes in you cocksucker
I'm closing shop on your block with this glock sucker
Won't be no serving on this corner
Won't be no hanging, swanging, swerving on this corner
I gives a fuck about your homie
You can play crazy if ya want to, but ya pussy when I get up on ya
But when these blades go to chopping, niggas gone be dropping
And vertebras going to be rocking
And I'm a..

[Chorus]

[Trick Daddy]
I gives a fuck that you getting do
I gives a fuck bout your hoe, gives a fuck bout who she know
Ain't no joking in my game, don't get chained,
and slanged about my cocaine
I know some niggas, who want to smoke,
He want some hotter green and a quarter head for that coke
Won't be no jacking while I'm stacking
Won't be no slapping, no laughing, or no motherfucking macking
Just me and my workers in a circle,
And ain't nobody and hiding 'round cause if they is I got to hurt ya
And if it's worth it we'll dirt ya,
I know ya strapped so I'm wait for I search ya
I know ya scared, and you gonna get it, and I can feel yo ass
Put this thing inside your head and I'm kill yo ass

[Chorus x4]

Toby Kieth

"How Do You Like Me Now"

I was always the crazy one
I broke into the stadium
And I wrote your number on the 50 yard line
You were always the perfect one
And the valadictorian so
Under your number I wrote "call for a good time"

I only wanted to catch your attention
But you overlooked me somehow
Besides you had too many boyfriends to mention
And I played my guitar too loud.

How do you like me now?
How do you like me now,
Now that I'm on my way?
Do you still think I'm crazy
Standin here today?
I couldnt make you love me
But I always dreamed about living in your radio
How do you like me now?

When I took off to Tennessee
I heard that you made fun of me
Never imagined I'd make it this far
Then you married into money girl
Aint it a cruel and funny world?
He took your dreams and tore them apart.

He never comes home
And youre always alone
And your kids hear you cryin down the hall
Alarm clock starts ringin
Who could that be singin
Its me baby, with your wake up call!

How do you like me now?
How do you like me now,
Now that I'm on my way?
Do you still think I'm crazy
Standin here today?
I couldnt make you love me
But I always dreamed about living in your radio
How do you like me now?

thats pretty bad when a country singer is a better lyricist then southern rappers i mean cmon tobeys even got multies

I think it would be better to compare the old south with the new one:

Young Jeezy's 'My Hood' with:

Scarface: On My block

For the block boy, take it rough...

[Scarface]
Everyday it's been the same old thang on my block
Ya either workin or ya slangin cocaine on my block
Ya had to hustle, cuz that's how we was raised on my block
And ya stayed on ya hop until ya made you a knot
On my block, to hangout was the thang back then
And even when ya left out, ya came back in
To my block, from Halloway, Belfort, to Scott
Reed Road to Phlox, we load the spots
Smoke weed and rocks, drink all the blue dots
On yo' block you prolly had a Fat Pat or Tupac
Or Big Pun, or B.I., ya homeboys from knee-high
And even when it was stormin outside, that nigga'd be by
That's me dawg, on my block, I ain't have to play the big shot
Niggaz knew me back when I was stealin bell from Shamrock
And my nickname was Creepy, if Black June could see me
He'd be, trippin - and I'd bet he still try to tease me

[Chorus]
My block - where everything is everything fa sheezy
My block - we probably done it all homey believe me
My block - we made the impossible look easy, fa sheezy
My block - I'd never leave my block, my niggaz need me

[Scarface]
On my block, we duck the nigga-haters and the cops
Fuck a hotrod, we race Impalas, chromed-out
On my block - it ain't no different than the next block
Ya get drunk and pass out, and they back ya to the house
And when you wake up on the couch you goin right back at it
On my block when ya that fucked up they laugh at it
On my block, it's just another day in the heart
of the Southside of Houston Texas, makin ya mark
On my block, we're cueing all the time, playin dominoes
Keep the swishers sweet down until my mama goes
back inside -- then we can fire
Pass it around a few times to get high

[Chorus] - 2X

[Scarface]
On my block, everybody business ain't ya business
What's goin on in this house is stayin here, comprende?
On my block, ya had to have that understanding
Cause if ya told Ms. Mattie, she went and told Gladys
And once ya mama got it, it was all on the wire
And when the word got back, the set yo' ass on fire
On my block, we got some 'Nam vets shell-shocked
Who never quite got right, now they inhale rocks
On my block - it's like the world don't exist
We stay confined to this small little section we livin in
Oh my block, I wouldn't trade it for the world
Cause I love these ghetto boys and girls
Born and raised, on my block...
...

[Chorus] - 2X
