Ripping DVD's to Avi?

Just wondering if anyone has found the best and easiest program for doin this, or has some instructions for using some of the popular ones. I see DVD rips all the time, with perfect quality, but when I rip something to AVI, the quality is pixelated and pretty shit. Help me out with this, so I can start uploading some of my DVD collection.

If it doesnt let you convert to avi, you can always rip, then convert later...
