it might be a long shot but it could very well be the problem. change the CMOS battery and see if that works.

just open up your computer tower and look for a 3V lithium battery on your motherboard. just replace it and see if it works. im not 100% sure its the problem but who knows it could work

The CMOS battery starts up the computer, and keeps track for the system clock and supplies memory that instructs how the computer is to start up. Meaning the problem has nothing to do with it, if like chet said, he cant find a file. (the computer is already on it just cant find a file to load)..

I had the same kind of prolem last december, i had to restore my computer though. Because my computer is toshiba based and it doesnt come with a windows cd i can boot some missing files from.

I suggest u try to insert your windows CD while booting, it MIGHT (im no expert) read that file of the disc if it has a problem.

Try starting up in Safe mode by tapping F8 when ur computer is booting in black screen.

But my best is suggestion would be, pay some money to a person who knows what hes doing and he might be able to boot it right for u there on the spot. Most probable scenario is ur gonna have to re-install windows since its got files missing or corrupted.

Just a question, how did u run ot of ram? are u sure u left enough free space on ur HD when u were using system restore?

^^^^he said his computer died. if he cant power on his computer then he cant re-install windows or put it on safe mode. it has to be something on the motherboard(i.e. the CMOS battery), the motherboard itself, the power supply, or the hard drive

The way i read it, i assumed the "missing shell. file" message poped up when he was booting,

Ive had that problem, so i noticed a resemblance.

the CMOS battery isnt required to run da computer
u can run a computer without it

and for ur problem da CMOS batt isnt da case
its a file corruption
simply do a boot up...

and reinstall windows....

*ur computer isnt DEAD coz it is askin for a file .. so that means it still scans da hard drive and it goes to da windows logon screen.. which means windowslogon.exe

That's right, you don't need that CMOS battery to run a computer.. :y:

I suggest you start up your computer in DOS-mode, put your CD with the burned .dll in your drive, and type this (if D: is your CD-drive):

cd..
cd..
D:\
copy shell32.dll C:\windows\system32\

and then make a reboot. If that didn't help you, you'll always have the option to make a repair of your current xp-installation. Just startup the install program and follow the instructions.
