Dr. Dre to Stay in Retirement?
Written by certifiedmatt 4 hours, 21 minutes ago
Everyone in the Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit camp was claiming that we'd be seeing the release of Dr. Dre's much-anticipated Detox before the end of 2007. That probably won't be happening anymore.
XXL editor in chief Elliot Wilson explained in a blog post yesterday that Dre had been set to announce his official return in the pages of the magazine's current issue, which happens to also be its 10th anniversary edition. Things didn't quite work out that way and Wilson decided to share his story:
Detox was really coming out (at least by the end of 2007) and Doc was gonna announce his formal return in the pages of hip-hop's best magazine. But then things fell apart. Word to ?uestlove. August was too soon to spill the beans so I fell back. Was promised the cover a few months later closer to the release. But now a few lil birdies from coast to coast are buzzing that Detox is not gonnna happen until at least early 2008. After Marshall crowns himself King.
Dre is a notorious perfectionist and hasn't released an album since 1999's The Chronic 2001 and before that 1992's The Chronic. Some have likened the now legendary Detox to a hip hop version of the Beach Boys' Smile, which notoriously took Brian Wilson nearly 40 years to release. Dre reportedly began working on the album around 2000 and might have possibly completed it in 2004, before scrapping it entirely only to announce earlier this year that it would be released by the close of the calendar. That doesn't look to be the case anymore.
Dr. Dre to Stay in Retirement?
Well kids, there’s always next year. And, hey, buck up. For this rumor to be true, it means that this rumor has to be completely false. So Shady Aftermath has that going for them. Unless of course Curtis is the only thing that they get out before the end of the year.
What is going on over there, exactly?
