50 Cent is going to outsell rival Kanye West -- or quit trying. The beefy bullet target has proclaimed he will give up his career as a solo artist if West outsells him when the two both release new CDs on Sept. 11.
"Let's raise the stakes. If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on Sept. 11, I'll no longer [perform] music. I'll write music and work with my other artists, but I won't put out any more solo albums," 50 tells the New York Daily News. "They would like to see Kanye West give me a problem because I've worked myself into a space where I've become the favourite. Everybody roots [for] the underdog when he goes against the favourite."
The "favourite" might be a bit of a strong word, though. 50 Cent's new album, Curtis, has been delayed several times from its original due date of June 26 because of last-minute additions to the album after the album's first two singles "Straight to the Bank" and "Amusement Park" failed to make as big an impact as expected. "Straight to the Bank" peaked at No. 30 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts and has since falled off, while "Amusement Park" climbed to a meager No. 57. And Fiddy has already prepared a bit of out for himself, claiming West's record label is going to fix sales figures of his new album, Graduation.
"And I bet this: When Kanye West's sales come in, he's gonna have a 70 per cent decrease 'cause Def Jam is gonna buy records [the first week] to keep him closer to 50 Cent," the rapper declares. "So, watch the first week and then watch the second week. Watch his ass drop off the planet."
50 Cent's last album, The Massacre, sold 4.85 million copies in the U.S. compared to West's 2.8 million in sales for his last, Late Registration; however, West's disc was critically lauded and won the hip-hopper three Grammys. Not that 50 Cent cares about critical acclaim.
"I didn't get one trophy for The Massacre," 50 tells the New York Daily News. "I don't get trophies, I get cheques. He gets the trophies. And I'll be sitting here like, 'It's cool 'cause I get the cheque.'"
Well, at least this fine, upstanding artist has his priorities in the right place, and we're sure Curtis will be yet another ingenious, reflective look at societal norms that's sure to shift the cultural paradigm into a new era of clairvoyance. That or 50 Cent is going to make a wad more cash, bump up his clothing line sales and maybe release another totally awesome and wickedly violent video game! We sure know whose album we'll be supporting by buying their album on Sept. 11.
