What makes a person buy music from an artist?

I've been thinking about this, and I wanted to know, if someone were making music in his home, and then blow up and is an instant star, how do people become compelled to buy their album?

good question, my guess is word of mouth, whom they are signed too, and the singles they release, that's my guess

I personally think the whole "single" thing is a rip off, since the artist only has to do 3 songs and the rest can be filler tracks and dumb little people will go and buy it. I think we should be able to listen to the full album before we buy, and buy it because we love it, not because we have to buy it because we want to find out if we love it. Thats giving fame to people who dont deserve it.

I personally, used to buy tapes, mixtapes some years back when i first started collecting hip hop and i'd buy these bootleged mixtapes that had the best songs from a few albums(best songs as in best songs not singles and hits) then i could easily go and buy the album knowing what i expect to hear. But ofcourse back then rappers didn't suck as much as they do now. Now i wont buy an album till ive fully heard it. Infact i havent bought a new album in a year...

I use to buy CDs outta curiosity (Sumtimes its a good album like outkast & an old busta rhymes cd otha times i did a horrid mistake *coughs*chingy,lloydbanks*coughs*)
But most of time its cos i luv the artist & the album like asp said i'll download an album and if i enjoy it i'll go buy it. I don't like stealing an artist music if they've actually put effort in it, like u get these artist's that drop a great single but there albums shit so i'll download their music but not buy it.

Doug York & Bugout are two guys from New Hampshire (where I'm from) who are pretty good rappers. They have a group called Granite State. I wouldn't say they blew up, but there pretty well known around here at least.

If they arent too famous that's (along with word of mouth) is the only way I know them, beacause they are from around here.

when an album comes out..if that belongs to some1 you listen to..and you like..you consider him/her as one of your fave artists..and if you believe it will probably a nice album
you go buy it

even tho i dont buy albums

the other thing is "singles"

but theres a fact..the singles are the songs worth showing when you come up with an album
i mean its generally like tht..singles are the best songs of the albums..most of the rest are maybe just "ok" maybe some are "wack"
thats why theres something like that singles

they show the best ones first
to make us think thats really worth buying the whole album

but its hardly ever like that tho
