A post mortem is taking place on the victim of a fatal assault in Sligo town early today.

The victim has been named locally as 23-year-old Tom Ward, who was married with one two-year-old daughter.
Gardaí say Mr Ward was the victim of a vicious attack as he sat in his van outside his parents' home in Joe McDonnell Drive in the Cranmore estate in Sligo.
A car with four men wearing balaclavas drove up close to the van. At least one man was armed with a weapon, a hatchet or a slashook.
Gardaí believe Mr Ward was pulled from the van and attacked, receiving one fatal blow from the weapon to the back of his head.
He was rushed to Sligo General Hospital but he died there at 6.10am this morning.
Mr Ward had represented Ireland in boxing.
This morning gardaí removed his van from the scene for forensic examination. They later removed a second car from the scene for technical examination.
A car, believed to be the vehicle used by his killers, was later found abandoned about 5km from the scene.
They say they are keeping an open mind as to the motive for the attack.
However, it is believed one theory being examined by the gardaí is that this is part of a feud between traveller families.
The post mortem is being carried out on the remains at Sligo General Hospital by the Deputy State Pathologist Dr John Curtis.
