Simple. Who is the most underrated rapper not be acknolged by the masses of mainstream. In my list, there are too many but here's a list
Obie Trice: The 2nd best on shady, somehow gets the least exposion when his album comes out
Talib Kweli: NY lyrical wordpalyer
Apathy: One of the underground's best
Rakim: A Pioneer in rap introducing Multies that paved the way for people like Nas and Eminem
Redman: Crazy but brillant original rapper who gets less exposure than he deserves

Rakim - for what he has done for rap and the huge amount of top notch album he had done, he is hugely underrated by this generation, the previous one, knows whats up and even rappers know whats up.
Big L - Best rapper dead.
Guru - Mizing the jazz back into hip hop and slower and more smooth manner.. underrated, maybe not lyrically the best, but the dilivery and the music ... perfect.
Masta ace - on the scen since like forever, since he used to kick it with biz markie and BDK (cold chillin' all day everyday), always underground,
Big daddy kane - use to be mainstream, but always was the king of punchlines, hardest pimp theres ever been. Motherfuckers out there right now, should be jotting his rhymes down and making notes and shit.

I would also say mf doom, but he has a large fanbase and doesn't want to go mainstream. He's more like a creative rarity that only a few people that evolve to a certain level of understainding rhyme schematics will appreciate, the rest will just feel too dumb and offended by the fact that he uses words other rappers don't know. MC-wise - top notch.

aare u kidding me asp,

he's considered the GOAT and the best rapper by soo many and your saying he's underrated?

the only reason he's not as known like jayz or eminem because he's not mainstream...

yes, underrated.

Rakim is NOT underground. He is one of those that laid down the foundation for mainstream success. Plus if i remember right, you wouldn't have even know that GOAT rapper considered by so many, if i didnt recommend it on tr from time to time. Underrated because motherfuckers don't pay the respect due and in 96-98 ... the whole dead-rapper-dickridery began.

Jay-z has years, and years and loads of influence to inflict before you could even compare the two. Eminem could pay some respects too.

i also say rakim is very under-rated

i didnt know nothing about him till asp mentioned him a couple of times

id also say

Obie trice, he should be eminems main focus on his label he has so much potential its un-real

Marco Polo, i aint sure if this guy would be classed as main stream or underground, what i do know is that his tracks are awesome on all aspects form lyrics to beat to concept and that he is completely unknown, he works with masta ace, and asp mentioned above masta ace os always underground so maybe marco polo is underground aswell

jin, a guy who never makes a track, just because, ever one of his tracks has a strong concept, i have only heard 1 or 2 of his tracks that are just normal simple concept tracks, along with that he has great lyrics and a great flow, although i do recognise he got fucked over by a record label, im disregarding all that and talking about his stuff put out after that

nearly every UK artist, they get disregarded and laughed upon by american hip hop fans as soon as they hear the accent, need i say more

JIN SUCKS

and asp you are right, the reason i know rakim is cuz of you... but even so.. GOAT and underrated it's kinda like messed up,

he's more unknown than underrated, cause the people that know him, think he's one of their top 3 or 5..

if you could come up with one concept as strong as a jin track, then you can say he sucks :p j/k

even if you dont like the artist, you should still be smart enough to notice his skills

and bout rakim, not really loads of people know about him and think eminem, nas, 2pac, biggie ect. are better than him

but underated just doesnt mean they dont think there the best, rakim doesnt get enough respect due to him for what he has done for rapping

xzibit is a nobody.

about the Rakim thing, Tash. yes, you can go to many forums and read of people praising him. but wut about the general public? when looking at hip-hop listeners as a whole, the amount of people who know of/ pay respects to Rakim is but a sliver.

A good song which remembers the old school like Rakim and loads of others, but as someone said he has loads of fans but he isn't showed on hip hop channels, normally it's the stupid songs which come from the commercial emcees.

I'm not too sure who's underrated or not but I agree with Obie Trice.

Re: The Most Underrated

Postby 4D » Aug 24th, '07, 02:39

Underrated is the wrong title for this topic, because that's not the real question being asked. It should probably be Underappreciated or underacheivers. And even then it's only determined by how you judge success, ratings or achivements.

Asp is right, and Tash is right. Asp is saying that Rakim is underrated by the masses (mainstream), but he's not he's just underknown. As Tash said, anyone who knows hip-hop or has heard any of Rakims discography would put him in the top ten at least. But in most lists he has a steady placing at number 1. So how is he underrated? Only by fame & money to impact on hip-hop ratios. Simply put, he revolutionised rapping. Yet he still dwells in the realm of obscurity. When really he deserves to be topdog, raking in the money and being the foremost rap icon.

I was gonna post a list, but now i've realised that there really is no underrated. Because if they were underrated we wouldn't be putting them on the list. They are highly rated by us their loyal listeners, and it's our job to spread the word.
